Can't suspend enough disbelief...

...to get through this. From the ridiculous medical inferences to the lack of anything reasonably appropriate to what Alaska is really like in the month of December, this was awful. When it is 7 degrees out, one needs gloves. December in Alaska does not have sunlight for more than a few hours, if that. One isn't going to be able to run an entire medical practice when one has only done her first appy.

Awful. Simply awful.

Didn't the reindeer, elves, and Santa Claus bother you too? Those weren't exactly realistic aspects either.

The Santa Claus part seemed to belong to another movie all together. All the unbelievable stuff the original poster mentioned (light at 6:30 am in Alaska in December, A fresh-from-medical school student becoming the only doctor in town), bothered me all through the movie. But the Santa Claus stuff was almost never explored, just tagged on. It's like they had 2 different ideas for a movie and couldn't agree which movie they were making.

How about a whiz kid 40 year old intern trying to get a prestigious residency? She's at least a decade too old for this role.

reply

Yes maybe but still smokin hot though!!...I do think she is better looking in some other movies, her hair and eye makeup were not the best in this movie!...

reply

My first thought too. I can suspend reality about just about anything in a Christmas movie but an almost 40 yr old woman playing someone who should have been late twenties (after med school and residency) was a bit much. She's a cute girl and looks younger than her age but not late twenties

reply

The target audience for all these Christmas movies is women in their 30s and 40s. So they all remember watching DJ Tanner on Full House as a child. Having a familiar face is more important than realism in these movies.

reply

Late 20s is about the youngest a Dr would normally be. I think she looks great and better looking than most "20 somethings" I think its almost silly to think she is too old for the role. Ive seen people that look older than she does and they are much younger. Also she's beautiful. Im guessing women folk get jealous when a woman is attractive over 30.

reply

LOL, yea she does absolutely look great and I enjoyed the movie, but no, someone pushing 40 would not just be getting out of a residency looking for a fellowship unles they were a late bloomer which she definately was not. Just an observation not a big deal

reply

Who cares? Shes hot!

reply

This is one movie that I could enjoy. Not many movies have put me in the Christmas spirit this season, but this one did.

If we can save humanity, we become the caretakers of the world

Not to mention that no one in Anchorage would refer to 7 degrees in December as "mild"...Fairbanks, maybe, but not Anchorage...the daylight thing bothered me as well. Also, just because it's a small town in Alaska doesn't mean you couldn't find a coffee shop with an espresso machine. I grew up in a little village in AK (about a thousand people) and I can think of 5 places to get a latte there...

Yeah, the warm Alaskan days and nights was troubling to me, (as well as the fact that they didn't seem to have frost on their breath) and isn't it pretty dark up there during the winter? Something like 67 days of darkness or so in the arctic circle.

But I think my biggest problem with the movie was Rudy the Reindeer.

What happened to the other eight? Did Rudy eat them to gain their essences? Is that why he was able to pull Santa and the sleigh all by himself? Did he just snap one night and take out the rest of the reindeer for not letting him play in any reindeer games? I wonder if he looked like those two psychotic clockwork reindeer from K. Gordon Murray's Mexican "Santa Claus" movie that they featured on MST3K...

Heck, even the Griswalds were able to launch a sleigh with a full compliment of reindeer into the sky.

Okay, so maybe Cousin Eddie blew it up into the sky, but still... :)

I agree that the green trees in the snow, her aversion to wearing gloves, the fact that we couldn't see anyone's breath outside, the boy getting a poison ivy-like rash in the winter, the floral bouquets being carried outdoors with no wrappings--and many other oddities made this movie hard to watch. Those things are not the same as having Santa and elves in the story. Those things look like carelessness on the part of the movie makers who are showing disrespect for an audience they assume is too dumb to notice. It is insulting. They could cut corners when making movies for less sophisticated audiences decades ago, but not in 2014.

The lead actress did a good job, has a pleasing personality and is very photogenic, which is more than I can say for others in this cast. Hallmark, as usual, has fleshed out its cast with some unattractive actors who must be someone's relatives. That just adds to the amateurish quality. I did not like Frank/Santa's gravelly, smoker's voice. He would frighten little kids, and I agree that part of the story seemed like a last-minute add-on.

reply

You talk about certain aspects of the film as being "insulting"?

I find your comment:

quite insulting. So only beautiful people should ever be seen on screen? As if there isn't already enough of a disconnect between real life and Hollywood "perfection"!

reply

Totally agree! Anyone who lives or has lived in Alaska would find this difficult to watch. 300 miles due north is usually just another 737 flight on Alaska Air to Fairbanks. 6:30 am in the middle of winter even in Anchorage has another three hours minimum before it's light out. The shipping into Alaska was somewhat accurate, though, considering many companies consider Alaska to be international and won't ship here. Pashminas are very warm, by the way.

As a mom, I wanted to bundle everyone up in this movie....it's Alaska! I get filming, but why are all the windows down in every car?

Love Candace and Brian....but some things were so out there, it took my attention off of the movie. Star gazing at night....no hats on!

reply

At least Candace did not biblethump us!
