did simon open that gift to know what he was in for instead of destroying it and was i the only one thinking about what could have happened if simon destroyed that gift instead of opening it

The film doesn't really hint either way, but I personally doubt it, especially when you consider he had to personally suspend his own disbelief throughout the film, despite his harassment of and antipathies towards Gordo during his high school years.

Yes! The filmmakers would have avoided confusion regarding this film--it's the sixth The Gift in IMDb.
