Jangles' Stare (Spoiler)

When he came back from going missing and finished whatever was in his bowl, Robyn asks where he's been. There's this oddly long shot of him staring back at her. What was this supposed to mean? I was almost waiting for him to speak or something. Very weird.

reply

you're looking into that scene too much.

reply

I just saw the film. To me it felt like the dog was giving an almost accusory stare at Robyn, and perhaps this was because the dog had possibly been mistreated by Gordo, and was blaming Robyn. (Haha such emotional depth for one dog! What a good actor!) I am obviously speculating here, there is no proof that the dog was mistreated, and if it were, it would probably be whimpering and scared, not defiant... but that's how I interpreted the scene anyway.

I took it back to the eyes comment Gordo made later in the film. The dog knew the truth. Gordo did take him. I don't think he hurt him though. He wanted the dog to know him and not bark when he came into the house.

reply

Ahhhhh, of course.

reply

Brilliant! I never thought of that.

Brilliant! I hadn't thought of that but your spot on!

reply

Great Catch! I kept thinking about the comment made by Gordo about truth being in the eyes.. but couldn't solve the puzzle!

reply

Great point. I agree that the dog did give Robin "a look," crazy as that sounds!

reply

I agree, the dog was a great actor. xD

reply

I thought he was thinking "I'm still hungry. Give me more."

reply

That's what I thought at first too, but then it just went on and on.

Great balls of fire!...*hiccup*...It's Rhett!

reply

"I thought he was thinking "I'm still hungry. Give me more.""

HAHA! That's exactly what I thought too.

reply

It means I can't tell you what happened. Because I'm a dog

reply

Haha, awesome reply! 

Well . . . maybe you are over-reading the scene. Do you have a dog? I have a dog of the really, really big brown eyes variety, and I find myself gazing into her eyes for minutes at a time on a regular basis. (Do you know that the primary social distinction between dogs and wolves is that wolves will NOT look people in the eyes, but dogs will?) I agree with poster who said that Gordo took Jangles in order to make friends with him (so that Jangles will not bark when Gordo shows up). Also I think Gordo was in love with Robyn and wanted to imprint himself on her dog. It was her dog, I believe--her father named him so my guess is that her father died, and Robyn took the dog home. (Which in fact is how my family adopted our big-eyed dog.) That long stare was just Robyn's thing.

by the way the line "My father named him" was a great line, a significant plot clue

Great movie!

Remember that Robin was beginning to feel unsafe in her own house, and paranoid about everything. The dog's long, creepy stare signifies that Robin wasn't even sure if she could trust her own dog anymore. Robin asked, "Where have you been?" Of course, the dog cannot answer. But the stare suggests, "I've been off with my new best friend Gordo, who has won my loyalty. We've been up to no good. Wait till you see what we have in store for you."

The scene is just supposed to reflect the increasing level of fear and dread being experienced by Robin.

I have no idea but it was creepy at hell. Not sure if it was meant to be but I had to look away for a few seconds because it was weirding me out. If that was their point they succeeded.
