This show is meant to be a follow up to the movie, right? Except it's not canon to the movie, or something - I'm not completely sure.

Yeah it's going for this weird "part movie followup, part Marvel Animated Universe, part doing its own thing" canon
Other things they seem to be diverging to
-Quill being half Spartax, based off the comics, something Gunn has confirmed the movies will NOT be following
-Quill having a completely different Mix Tape
-Cosmo being more like the comic books (though in fairness we don't know if he'll have a bigger role in the movie sequel)
And probably more as the series goes on.
Not really new for Marvel animated stuff, a lot of their past shows have taken stuff from the movies, mix it with some things from the comics, and does it's own thing.
You are correct both Korath and the Dark Aster's pilot/throttle contol person are killed in the movie but are in the series. Even more strange is that the Dark Aster has been completely rebuilt after being destroyed and Ronan's universal weapon is either a new one or a rebuilt one since it was destroyed in the movie.
