Obnoxious

These girls seemed so obnoxious in the first episode.
Materialistic, Annoying, Fame Whores.
They present themselves as such.

It's satire

I love satire but I still believe these girls are fame whores.

I watched the 5 minutes I could tolerate. It's apparent they are fame whores who are justifying their actions by telling themselves it's satire.

It may not be a reality show, but what kind of artist would do a fake reality show to make fun of reality shows? That's like asking a priest to do a pornography so the rest of the world will know how bad they are.

They seem to think they are exposing the genre when in reality it's a reenactment of the same tired garbage. It's not satire when it's played in the same manner as the source. They aren't behaving any differently than those they think they're mocking.

Thank you Legendary_Badass ^^!!! 

Actually - that's kinda exactly what satire is. It mimics and exaggerates the thing its criticizing, in order to shed light on its problems.

Satire is meant to me so ridiculous that its sheer absurdity is the joke. Think about SNL's spoofs, or Curb Your Enthusiasm. They are poking fun at themselves and their own culture as a way of acknowledging how ridiculous it is.

That's pretty subversive, and self-aware. They ladies are doing really smart stuff, it's just a shame that it's going over folks' heads.

The SNL work you mention is not played at the same note as the material they are going after. Barely Famous could be billed as a reality show with the sister's confirming it as such, and no one would think they were joking.

Reality TV already has a level of staged scenarios, and people know that. These women are not opening eyes to the matter.

No offence, but you're clearly missing the fact this is parody and rather smart parody at that.

I for one am glad they play it so realistically, even it means some people will erroneously take it seriously.

reply

YES!!! They aren't really satirizing reality TV, they are taking on Hollywood and celebrity culture using the vehicle of reality TV.

My biggest fear about this show, is that people would miss the point, and take it at face value, and the brilliance would get lost. I'm happy somebody else is on to how smart this show is.

I write recaps and reacts for EW's The Community, but I write in a pretty sarcastic and ironic voice, so it might not be for everyone!
