Hilarious and depressing

For some reason, the clone Emily remind me of GLaDOS from Portal. So cold and emotionless. The story of David and the memory of Emily Prime and mommy almost brought a tear to my eye.

There was much to be sad about, but the positivity of Emily in the face of all this made the movie joyful and with some optimism.

For example, the clone explains that the end of the world is coming and people are trying to escape if they can, but much of humanity will not be able to escape, will be destroyed by cheap time travel or anhialated. Emily's response is hilarious and joyous - "OK" she says!

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Hertzfeldt is a Buddhist, in his acceptance of death and all things coming to an end, his valuing of this moment over the past or the future, in his appreciation of childlike naivety, in his mindful contemplation of the world around us. I see these elements in all his later films.

It's so bleakly sad, yet so funny and joyful, all at once! I'm left wanting to laugh and cry.

This is a stunning little masterpiece.

"What are you plotting?"

wasn't it a bitter film?
