Richie Rich is not very Rich

I binged watch the series(well accept one episode since there was a problem with the syncing)and OMG is this show just terrible. I will place my gripes below, but keep in mind I LOVE sitcoms, even ones I know are terrible(such s Full House) I find something good in it. So here we go:

1) The acting is horrendous, OMG, I can't even imagine what the casting call for this series was and how many actors they screen tested but if this was the best they could find all I can is shake my head at the production company for not delaying the series a bit to have more time. The best acting, well only acting in this series that even remotely got me to chuckle a bit was from the robot & Harper's stupid but best friend. Even Harper managed to actually carry an episode, but that isn't saying much. The two friends are annoying, Darcy is a despicable character and while I don't read any Richie Rich comics I can't see any artist writing a character like that as a friend. The father is a joke as well, whoever decided to make him such an idiot IS an idiot themselves, The biggest gripe I have is with the main actor, he is so over the top in his acting that I can't tell when he is acting scared, surprised or happy, he may look the part but he is no Richie Rich.

2) The writing is atrocious, the fact that any of the writing feels even remotely connected is amazing, the dialogue sucks, the way they relay what they are scripted to say is even worse and hardly anything is funny, I feel like this show is written for kids who are in diapers, grant it I'm not expecting Oscar worthy writing but come on, teens and adults grew up with this character.

3) The laugh tracks are essential in any great sitcom but I have never felt like it was overdone they place laugh tracks on EVERYTHING, funy or not you hear it, WHY??? I am wondering if the show runners and editors were afraid that their audience would be ADD or something, but even if so I'M ADD and I didn't need all those tracks. It felt like I was watching a Disney show and its not even run by Disney.

4) The back story is changed, why? I am understanding that not everyone reads comics or at least not every comic book character but this is common knowledge that Richie grew up in a rich household due to his father's brilliance, what could changing it to Richie accidentally discovering something do?

I heard there is gonna be another 11 episodes, I really hope for the sake of the character that they rethink their approach otherwise this series won't go past 21 episodes. Thankfully its only 10 episodes so far but you may wanna watch in 3's or not at all

Your overthinking it. Your also aiming a bit high... this is more like a Disney Show than a Network Sitcom ALA Full House.

You say it's not even a Disney show... But technically it is. Phil Lewis directed several of the episodes... Ever seen pretty much every recent show on Disney? Well yeah, he had a hand in that... Suite Life On Deck, Kicking It, etc.

I'm watching this with my son & his half sister and they dig it. To be honest, I was hoping for better but this is pretty much right on par w/most Disney shows... It's passable for what it is.

Well Disney is not producing it, the effects are horrible even for a Disney show quality.
Not sure how old your kids are but when I was 5 or 6 we had shows like Perfect Strangers, Out of This World and more, not too mention animated shows. Its a shame how dumbed down shows are now and how it treats its audience like babies. I know some parents are sensitive but that is what a ratings system is there for and Richie Rich, from what I remember as a kid is smarter than this series is making it out to be. Again I gotta ask why did they make the father so dumb? Whats the point in making Richie self made by accident. I would rather have the film version adapted into a series with that tone. You do have to admit the laugh tracks feel forced. Glad your kids enjoy it, but the character has never been properly adapted and that sucks

I have no idea why the dad is so stupid, definitely one of my gripes with the show. At times it's almost kind of creepy how he interacts with the other younger characters in the show.

I thought the first few episodes were pretty bad but I found it got better as they introduced more characters. We still haven't finished the the episodes tho.

I remember Perfect Strangers, I liked it when I was younger but you gotta admit... It was pretty silly too. 'Well feed me garlic & call me stinky' That line always pops in my head when I think of that show lol.

Oh yea the shows I grew up on, especially Saved By the Bell tended to get really stupid but they always had good acting or writing or some redeeming quality. Perfect Strangers for instance, was about a foreigner trying to get used to living in a new country with a cousin he never knew and in turn about his cousin learning to be a bit looser as he is at the start a tight wad.
Fact of the matter is hour long genre shows are more than ever the big focus for television writers, so sitcoms are given those who can't seem to get that big writing deal. With kids typically loving bright colors and music they don't feel the need to generate any kind of story that adults can at least enjoy while being "forced" to sit with their kids.
Recently I saw Girl Meets World and while its not winning any major awards(at least outside of Disney)it has a focus that allows Boy Meets World fans(like myself) to enjoy a nice half hour series with a story while the kids get to enjoy the funny antics that the kids get into. That is how you write a sitcom based around characters that existed more than one generation. This feels like it should be geared toward the Barney crowd

If its terrible why the *beep* did you binge watch it?

reply

I binge watched it because one its only 10 episodes and 2 shows tend to start off bad and get better as the season progresses.

Richie Rich with Macaulay Culkin is much better. Avoid the tv series on Netflix.

I wish I could disagree...the acting is horrible. I watch shows with my kids all the time, and the acting is always subpar. But this acting is beyond atrocious. Makes the Anakin Skywalker kid look like the best actor ever.

And the whole "dad is stupid" this is well...stupid.

And as someone else mentioned...fetish maid was completely unnecessary...and the actress playing her is unable to even play a robot...sad.

This show is the WORST! It's an insult to not only the people who created the character Richie Rich, but the kids this show is aimed at. How the hell did this get the green light from Netflix.
