So she still has the same problem only even worse. Her dream is to teach astronomy at the Chicago University. So what's he supposed to do? He owns a RANCH. In TEXAS. I mean they have some pretty nice dairy farms in Wisconsin, but I doubt that is going to be up his alley. And it would just be too coincidental that his ranch is on the outskirts of Austin where the University of Texas is that might give her a teaching job. After she fulfills her obligations with the Chicago school, that is.

Simple, she didn't really love Adam, and he didn't really love her. Neither were willing to give up anything for the other.

Notice that she rode off with Luke to travel the rodeo circuit.

She can teach astronomy in Texas. Subconsciously, Adam wasn't important enough to her to compromise. With Luke, maybe she could/would.
