I haven't even seen S2. Is it as good as S1?

reply

Depends who you ask...I'd say the consensus has been that it's not. The pacing is much slower and drawn out. It takes a bit for the pieces to come into focus and even then a lot is left up in the air so I think that pissed a lot of people off. It's perhaps not as kinetic as S1 was, but I still liked it a whole lot and there are some masterful moments in it.

If you dug the first season I'd say this one is more than worth a watch just so you can see where it's headed more. As much as I miss the show, I don't mind them taking more time because it seems like Esmail is doing that precisely to more finely tune the script and the overall season arc and work out the kinks he and others had with last season. More time for more quality, I'm down!

reply

Okeydokey, I'll put it in my list of series to watch then. Thanks!

Hope ya like it! Enjoy!

I haven't seen season 2 yet either. I'm waiting for it to come on amazon or Netflix. That's how I saw season 1 and it was great to binge watch the show. I had to do a lot of rewinding to catch all the things that were going on.

reply

Yeah, S2 moves a bit slow sometimes imo, but binge watching helps a lot because you know you can just keep watching and there will happen something incredible soon. But slow or not, every single scene has a certain 'magic', the characters interacting, the unspoken between them, the hidden meanings, the way the scene is visually composed, the use of music - it's just stunning. There are some very good moments in S2.

reply

Yeah, I know what you mean! Now I'm getting excited to see it. I hope it'll be on Amazon soon!

Just saw Season 1 on DVD and ended up binge-watching it myself---after seeing it, I get the critical hype, to some extent. The show is weird, dark, suspenseful and truly strange half the time---just how I like both my fave shows and movies, lol. Both Elliot and Tyrell (the arrogant, weird tech executive) are a damn trip and a half by themselves--both are two seriously fckd up dudes, for real. Basically everyone else in the show is much more normal compared to them.

I'm glad USA is giving him the time to do it too, it must be nice to be backed up like that. I look forward to seeing what Esmail does with this extended time!

I've listened to a couple interviews with him and he seems to really listen and take that to heart. Not that he hasn't defended his choices, but it seems him taking this time is his way of recognizing some of last seasons missteps. I still really liked S2, but I totally understand the gripes folks had with it...considering this is Esmail's first foray into tv, I think he's doing one hell of a job though, it's also understandable to have that in mind and realize he's probably still getting his barrings in how to tell this long form.

I agree that this season may go over better in time. I think Esmail, since he comes from feature writing more sees each section as a part of a film in a way...I made the statement during S2 that once we have all the pieces or even its bookend of S3 it will fit in much better and maybe make more sense.

But, I also get that that doesn't necessarily always work in tv. You have to have that unique balance of fulfilling season expectations, like you said, while also continuing the larger story. Too bad it doesn't just come out of a vacuum right?!

What exactly would these missteps be? I finally managed to watch S2, and while I found it a bit too slow at times, I still love this show and can't find much to criticize.

Bummer !

reply

Will they have more black characters. I don't think there were enough in the previous seasons and that's racist.

reply

Dunno if serious or...

reply

Get a life Angryboy. The Black Panthers are racist too.

reply

No,they weren't. And there were plenty of characters of color in the show---being in New York, the show is very accurately diverse, since it's set in one of the most diverse cities in the world. Ignore the AngryMan troll, please, and don't feed him/her/it. Obviously said troll hasn't watched the show, or they wouldn't have said something stupid like that. But, then that's what trolls like to do--start s***---it's their specialty.
