Martin Scorsese: Marvel Films Are 'Not Cinema'

"I don’t see them," he told Empire. "I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.

"Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.

"It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."

Several of the streaming services have banded together to pay their biggest stars to trash the upcoming streaming release of this conglomerate and what will be their main product. Apple TV/"The Morning Show" starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell (Everything we know—and don’t know—about AppleTV+) or Disney +/Marvel Movies (Martin Scorsese Compares Marvel Movies to Theme Parks: ‘That’s Not Cinema’) (Everything you need to know about upcoming streaming services, in one handy rundown) (Who will win the streaming wars?)

I find the fact that some people are going after him for this to be pretty funny.

reply

He was just showing his snobbery and ignorance (speaking for film snobs all over, I guess). Yeah, dat actually is funny when you think about it.

But he must not consider stuff like The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, or even Lord of the Rings to be cinema. Anway, just a film legend having his old man yells at cloud moment... it happens to the best of us, lol.

reply

Lol. Thanks for giving me another chuckle.

He doesn't like comic book movies so he's ignorant? Martin Scorsese? Yeah, big flashy spectacles like the Marvel movies aren't to his taste. So what?

reply

You’re welcome, J!

And also thanks for missing the point. If he had simply said those big flashy spectacles (as you referred to them cuz as those who dismiss these spectacles as lesser cinema know, there’s absolutely nothing to said spectacles except flash) that many of his fellow films snobs do not care for weren’t his thing, then that’s fine. There shouldn’t be any problem with that, right? Dude doesn’t like certain types of films, big whoop! The thing is, that’s not all he said. He flat out said these films are “not cinema”...

... oh, I know, it’s the end of the world! Baaaah.

You see it as nothing to flip out about, albeit it IS an absurd thing to say. And for it to come from someone like him, it should come as no surprise why his comments elicited a strong reaction; he and Bill Maher should start a club btw. Objectively, he is dead wrong. He can say they’re not high art all he wants (as detractors and *some* fans of these films do), however these beloved/acclaimed franchise films are 100% the very definition of cinematic. So what extremely high standards he has, huh? Being who he is, I suppose he’s allowed to of course. 🙄

I just couldn’t care less if the man is seen as a god by the industry and cinephiles... with a statement like that he is showing he has an archaic and snobbish view of what he considers to be “real cinema”. It’s that simple. With that in mind, you find it ridiculous that people, including those who’ve worked on these films, reacted negatively to what he said? Lol! And for real, his complaint about these “not cinema” films not exploring the human condition greatly amuses me, especially because unlike many Marvel films, the majority of Scorsese’s classic and popular films (doesn’t matter how intense and character-driven they are) are anything but moving and heartfelt. You read that right. You gonna convince me that the likes of Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comedy, After Hours, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, The Departed, and the freaking Wolf of Wolf Street touched and moved viewers to tears like this little flashy film called Endgame did? Fuggetaboutit!

Quite a few Hollywood big wigs like Marty have come out to denounce the unstoppable force that is Marvel... just another day yawn... so I guess that is the real funny part seeing how said big wigs are being so stereotypical, i.e., throughout Hollywood history the oldheads have always gone after what’s currently the most dominant thing in cinema (funny enough it even happened to Marty himself back in the “real cinema” days), and now evidently Marty is carrying that smug torch and making true film nerds climax lmao.

Ignorant indeed. XD

reply

Yeah, and the more wound up you get about it, the funnier it is.

Please make an even longer post on the subject.

reply

No. Him not liking them is not what makes him ignorant. Him thinking they are not cinema is what makes them ignorant. Its the same as any snob who pretends a certain type of art is not art because they do not like it.
