Sp the Neflix shows are officially no longer canon?

Mahershala Ali has been cast as Blade. I Know Alfre Woodward showed up for 30 seconds in Civil War as another Character, but this is a lead character. It seems like they are going to pretend the Neflix shows never existed from now on.

JK Simmons played Commissioner Gordon and JJ Jameson.
Chris Evans, Johnny Storm and Steve Rogers.
Ryan Reynolds played Deadpool, Deadpool and Green lantern
Benedict Cumberbatch played Dormammu and Dr. Strange

What do these none MCU films have to do with anything? The same actor playing two different roles is a break in continuity, it just is. The MCU has made tremendous efforts to keep continuity since the first 2 movies. If you are fine with it, it doesn't mean everyone else has to be. In any case, it's a clear signal that Kevin Feige is not paying respect to the Netflix shows as MCU canon. But since the same actor has been cast as Robbie Reyes in a different continuity(as well as JK simmons), maybe the same actors could be brought into the MCU playing the same roles .

Maybe they will ret con Blade, making him the previously unknown twin brother of Cottonmouth?

Or...

... we can all just not lose our minds over the fact that one actor has been cast in two separate roles within the MCU. Ali can certainly play menacing... will be interesting if he can convey the physical ferocity of Blade. He's got big shoes to fill after Snipes.

That all said, who's to say what they will do with the Netflix heroes? I think they know that there was a lot of love out there for the Netflix MCU / NYC edition. It would be nice to think that they revive them intact.

reply

The only reason Ali as Cottonmouth and Ali as Blade is an issue is because we as a viewer choose to break that wall of acting and casting. When Eddie Murphy played the multiple roles of the Clumps we already broke that wall and just went with the story. In Endgame Chris Evans played both Steve Rogers. Just roll with it. The same actor is playing multiple characters but NOT at the same time.

Cottonmouth is dead. The actor formally playing Cottonmouth is now playing John Blade. Continuity isn't ruined or damaged at all.

reply

Agree completely. It's easy-peasy to just say,"Hey look! Same actor, but no connections between the characters."

Wait for it though... for sure there will be obsessive-compulsive types who will fill entire threads trying to somehow "makes sense" of it.

Ever see one of those pointless threads that argue on and on about whether something is a 're-boot / re-imagining / sequel' to some earlier movie? Planet of the Apes, every time there's a new James Bond actor cast, etc... Those things go on forever and are never resolved.

Film nerds everywhere will go crazy trying to somehow connect the new MCU X-Men to the Fox series. Marvel should troll the hell out of them by re-casting all the roles, but bring back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine for just one movie. Heads would explode.

I don't think there was much love for luke cage. Only Daredevil and The Punisher are worth reviving.

reply

Agreed..

I liked Luke Cage and I thought they were setting up a great story for S3. Luke taking over the club and being tempted to turn to the dark side as a result.

I never watched Iron Fist, based mostly on the lukewarm reviews it got.

I watched the first two seasons of Jessica Jones but it was a slog since the character was so unlikeable with the self-loathing and all.

But, yeah, if I could only pick two characters to continue moving forward, it would be DD and the Punisher.

Tony Stark is dead. Would you be fine with RDJ turning up as reed richards now?

reply

Sure. They could even have fun with it.

Reed Richards (Downey) starts with a goatee and dyed hair. Ben, Johnny and others needle him by commenting on how much he resembles a the now-deceased Tony Stark. They could pile on by referring to Stark's amazing genius much to Richards annoyance.

In exasperation, he ditches the goatee and gets a bit petulant when he compares his genius to Stark's.

They don't even have to mention Stark by name... just something along the lines of:

"Hey, has anyone ever told you how much you look like..."

**Dagger eyes from Reed Richards**

"Uh... never mind..."

Well, according to the TV series version of "What We Do in the Shadows," Wesley Snipes is himself a vampire (albeit a daywalker), so no one should've replaced him.

Then again, so are Tilda Swinton, Paul Reubens and Evan Rachel Woods.

reply

Ali is a much better actor than Snipes. Also Snipes was problematic on the last Blade film. Only acting in close up shots. Also, What We Do In The Shadows certainly isn't canon in the MCU.

reply

Unless Kevin Fiege said they were canon at any point, I wouldn't consider them canon at all. The movies may be canon in the shows, but that certainly doesn't work the other way around. You'd think if the shows were canon, those characters would've had run ins with Spider-Man since they're all New York based. Also the shows are produced by Marvel Television, not Marvel Studios like the movies and upcoming Disney+ series' will be which will directly tie to the movies. I chalk up the shows to a multiverse thing.
