Don't know about you...but I can smell a re-release battle coming up between Endgame and Avatar.

I think when all's said and done, Endgame will be just within 10 million of Avatar at the worldwide box office. When Avatar 2 (or maybe even another of the sequels) is due to be released, I can smell Avatar returning to theatres again for a short while, but I can't see it doing that well (possibly only handing a few millions to its total). Endgame, though, definitely will have another re-release at some point. This damp squib of a *new* version won't be all they have up their sleeve. I can see more significant scenes and even different plot threads (kinda like the Rogue cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past (in my opinion, the best version of the film)). I still think there's a way to go in this race.

Thoughts?

It would be a crime not to. It's going to be so ridiculously close, and who wants that mediocre crap Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time forever? I mean I don't think that box office record will ever be broken again. Home cinema and other distractions are going to cause the box office to dwindle at some point.

I don't see it as much as a battle but an opportunity for Marvel to continue to capitalize on the increased presence and awareness of the Avengers as a brand within Marvel. There might not be an Avengers movie for a few years and Marvel would not be where they are today allowing for that IP to fade into nostalgia just yet.

Avatar is totally unlike The Avengers. The rewatchability of Avengers is unparalleled along with all of the preceding movies which are made denser by through lines that are paid off.

It is not a war nor a battle between the two movies. Marvel and Disney want to grow their market share for both and this gives them leverage.

They're both owned by Disney. The MCU has made all its money already. There's a lot more market to capitalize on by pushing the sequel to the biggest movie ever made. They're better off if Endgame doesn't take the spot.
