Avatars reason for its sales record is more due to its technological breakthrough rather than due to its story. It’s the first movie ever to offer a completely immersive 3D experience; previous 3D films before this only used 3D effects sparingly through the film. As such, crowds went in droves to see this new experience. As expected, 3D films command a 3D price tag; I’d be curious to know the 3D percentage of ticket sales vs. Avengers. 3D is no longer the novelty it was back in 2009 and 2010. In fact, 3D got so hot in 2010 that the first crop of films that rode the coattails of the 3D craze after Avatar had outsized success compared to later films within their respective franchises, despite their otherwise poor word of mouth (Alice in Wonderland, Clash is the Titans etc.)... studios green lighted sequels to these films thinking it was because people liked the films, rather than the real reason for their success being the newfound thirst for more 3D movies. As such, Alice Through The Looking Glass and Wrath of the Titans came after the 3D craze subsided and did substantially worse than their previous films.
Any future Avatar sequel would have to re-revolutionize technology again to see another breakthrough box office performance. If rumors of a glasses free 3D technology are true, then it just might happen.
But as stated earlier, Avatars current record includes two re-releases, whose box office totals are more than the gap that Endgame needs to beat the current record.
Zoe's in both of them, either way she gets to brag.
