Released with extra footage just to beat Avatar

Seriously, this is a pathetic move on Marvel’s part to save face.

The pinnacle of their series couldn’t top the first movie of James Cameron’s series.

So they re-release an already 3 hour-plus film with MORE footage?

Just make a better movie, losers...

reply

Endgame was 100X better than Avatar.

reply

Unfortunately it was not!

reply

Wow, they really wanted that title. And now the film has a messy alternate cut history.

reply

How much extra footage:
30 seconds?
3 minutes?
30 minutes? (If so, then they better put Port-A-Johns in the theaters. LOL)

reply

Not much.

“Not an extended cut, but there will be a version going into theaters with a bit of a marketing push with a few new things at the end of the movie,” Feige told Screen Rant. “If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises.”

The rerelease will reportedly debut June 28. That weekend provides a good opportunity for the rerelease as there are no major competitors debuting, only smaller budget films “Yesterday” and “Annabelle Comes Home,” neither of which are categorized in the same genre as “Endgame.”

reply

I think most of its competition will come from.... Avengers: Endgame which is still on multiple screens at the theater.

reply

I assume that they will replace the original version rather than exhibit two different versions in different theaters.

reply

I think this is a good idea. it might beat Avatar.

reply

Shut up troll

reply

DUDE...ENDGAME TOPPED EVERY MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF MOVIES EXCEPT AVATAR;WHICH WAS RELEASED UNTO VERY SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES...YOUR POINT IS WEAK AND WRONG.

reply

Avatar had no special circumstances

reply

AVATAR WAS RELEASED DECEMBER 2009...BEFORE THE MCU RULED THE BOX OFFICE...PLUS THAT DEC 2009 DATE TURNED OUT TO BE A RELATIVE DEAD SPOT FOR RELEASES ,LEAVING AVATAR TO SELL SELL SELL TICKETS WITH LITTLE TO NO COMPETITION FOR SIX MONTHS.PLUS THEY MARKETED IT AS A 3D/IMAX/THEATER EXPERIENCE.THEY SPENT A TON OF MONEY PROMOTING THE DFACT THAT THE THEATER WAS THE ONLY WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE MOVIE....SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LED TO A HISTORIC,INCREDIBLE ALMOST UNBEATABLE RECORD.

reply

“Avengers: Endgame” has already played in over 1,200 more theaters in the U.S. than “Avatar” ever did back in 2009.

Also, foreign box office was worth a lot less in 2009. China had 5000 screens. Today it has over 60,000.

Plus, people had to buy expensive tickets to watch “Avatar” in 3D on IMAX screens.

What all this means is that “Avengers: Endgame” has had waaaay more advantages and opportunities to beat “Avatar” ... but couldn’t do it.

Now they are re-releasing the film with some inconsequential scenes tacked. “Avengers: Endgame” was ALREADY OVER 3 HOURS LONG!

LOLOL

reply

OK...AVATAR WINS....YAY..AVATAR BEAT ENDGAME...POOR ENDGAME ONLY THE SECOND MOST MONEY MAKING MOVIE EVER....CAN YOU HEAR THE TEARS IN MY TYPING?...

reply

Avatar made its money due to gimmicks and advantages that modern films don't have. To try to claim otherwise is ludicrous. And if Endgame somehow does end up beating the Avatar total, don't pretend it was because they added a post-credits scene while it was still in theaters.

reply

“Avatar made its money due to gimmicks and advantages”

Such a detailed and complex argument, “FilmBuff”! And yet, I am unconvinced!

reply

Yeah, but you're a troll who just goes around making absurd comments to get a rise out of people.

reply

“Avengers: Endgame” has already played in over 1,200 more theaters in the U.S. than “Avatar” ever did back in 2009.

WRONG!

Endgame opened in more theaters but Avatar had more US theaters playing it in total. Over its 10 weeks in the theater Endgame is shown in 31,662 theaters (based on Box Office Mojo). Over its 34 (YES 34 weeks) the total number of theaters that showed Avatar was 43,198.

reply

I HEARD SUMMER 2019 IS ONE THE WORST BOX OFFICE EVER, ADVANTAGE END GAME , MOTHER FUCKER

reply

GOOD POINTS...LONG STORY SHORT AVATAR IS COOL....ENDGAME IS RAD AS F@#K!

reply

AVATAR WAS A SUPERBULOUS MOVIE....

reply

A more interesting metric which they don't actually do, would be how many people saw Avatar vs how many saw Avengers... Gross revenue from the box office means a lot to the studio shareholders, but it really is a silly metric if you are trying to judge how popular a movie was. What was the average movie ticket in 2009? What is it today? I know today the majority of the theaters near me are the recliner theaters that serve food and charge about 15 dollars a ticket... compared to 2009 when those types of theaters were much more rare, and even the IMax theaters didn't charge 15 dollars a ticket... So even if Avengers manages to get more revenue it doesn't mean that more people went out and saw it. Frankly if you wanted to really look at judging a films popularity you would determine the number of people that saw it in say the US, then look at what percentage of the population that number represented. Avatar and Avengers will surely top the lists for revenue, but I'm betting older movies like the Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind probably had a higher percentage of the people going to see the movie, but it will never look like it since tickets back then were probably closer to a dime or quarter depending on where you lived.

reply

You would have to count every time someone saw infinity online, on bluray and TV,since none of those existed when the wizard of Oz came out and the only way to see a movie was to buy a cinema ticket. This also applies to films like ET and original starwars by the way, when you would gave to wair years to see a film on home video. You can also apply this to avatar, when 3D was not yet available at home.

reply

You could do that... but to keep things simple it is probably easiest to just look at the percent of the movie going population of a country that was willing to go to the theater to see the movie when it was first released in theaters. Trying to pull in the audience that watched it at home on a TV or streamed it is pointless as you have no way of even telling if that at home viewer is a new viewer or someone that is watching it for the second or third time.

reply

Same with theatre tickets.

Avatar was also Re-Released Domestically:

12/18/2009 Avatar $749,766,139
08/27/2010 Avatar: Special Edition $10,741,486

Foreign: Re-Release FOREIGN TOTAL
-
8/26/10 $22,469,358

Roughly another $35 Million in re-release box office.

reply

lol I just made a reply on this....

OP clearly didnt know Avatar also had a re-release....

a re-release that resulted in an additional 35 Million, which Is almost exactly the amount Endgame would have Ended up behind Avatar...

This is classic DUMB trolling where the OP clearly did no research....

He had no idea the exact thing he was trying to make fun of Endgame for also applies to Avatar....

If I were the OP and I failed this spectacularly....I truly would delete this thread, feel deep and DESERVED Shame....and seriously consider never trolling again

reply

It is very eerie that Avengers:Endgame without a re-release may have been within mere dollars of the original release (Plus or minus) total of Avatar. Currently sitting at $2,749,603,966 as you noted A:E with only 59 days into the release run probably has another 5 to 6 Million.

I still don't think it will be easy to make up $35 Million over a three day re-release window Domestically. Who knows if any Foreign locations have the theater screens to allow for a substantial 3-day release window. Plus Disney/Marvel will have to have a pretty good size P&A spend to build audience awareness.

reply

It alrrady passed that total before the rerelease.

reply

It sure did and since the re-release Avengers:Endgame is performing at the re-release level and pushed back into the Top 10 domestic box office. Will it stay there? No. But the WW totals, bolstered by the jolt of Domestic Box-Office-Gatorade (Re-release), has A:E within striking distance. [$2,772 vs $2,788].

reply

Avatar: Don't say it. Don't you say it!

Endgame: On your left!

reply

Whats wrong with that? lot of movies have extended versions? no one is forcing you to go watch it

Don't forget that Avatar had a re-release as well. The main reason that movie did so well was because the technical aspect was like nothing we've ever seen before and 3-D was relatively new. Not only that, but James Cameron is a pretty big name. It's a good movie, but in terms of all the other aspects aside from the visuals, it's rather average.
