How should they build the X-Men in the MCU?

Would you rather a handful of heroes get solo film's building into an X-Men event, or would you rather have the X-Men as a team already established?

I'd personally prefer the already established approach. I could see them doing flashbacks from the beginning of the team forming, but like Spider-Man Who had several movies before, I don't necessarily think the team needs an origin.

X men works best as a team, they should have they're own universe and some how merge with mcu later down the line.

reply

Explain multiverse in Spiderman far from home. Maybe the X-men are from that universe.

reply

The biggest issue is that the MCU absolutely cannot just say "oh by the way, there have been mutants this whole time!". Ain't gonna fly.

reply

If they bring them in from another dimension or universe they can. It wouldn't be very hard.

reply

As this is what they're doing with Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man movie, I can see them shoehorning in a number of characters this way (FF, X-Men, all the Netflix characters, etc).

The line in the trailer sums it up: "The snap tore a hole in our dimension." This opens it up for all the heroes who haven't been mentioned yet. Pretty neat.

I think one of the main problems that the films had (and the comics have now) - too many mutants!

Total reboot introducing the original X-Men line-up; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Beast and Angel plus Professor Xavier.

reply

Honestly that's all I want to see to start with. I'm not against them growing the team in future outings, but just a basic starting lineup like that is what I want to see.

However I would like to see Nightcrawler at some point. I Just hope they don't make it Wolverine and Friends like most of the movies have been.

reply

They should ask themselves, what made the comics popular in the first place? The original team were amazing and the cast grew gradually (Havock & Polaris) before the second wave arrived (Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Banshee, Thunderbird). Then we had the gorgeous Byrne/Claremont run before it all started to get a little too convoluted.

Stay true to the comics and people will watch the films (just my opinion).

reply

While I definitely see where you're coming from and agree they should start with the comics original lineup, staying true to the comics isn't really what Marvel Studios is known for and so far it's turned out great for them.

reply

Good point! It's amazing that they've been able to take B-listers like Iron-Man & Ant-Man (and I mean no disrespect) and turn them into household names. GOTG anyone? I'm an avid comic collector and even I only had a passing knowledge of them (apart from the awesome Jim Starlin Adam Warlock run & the John Byrne run on Starlord/Peter Quill) - and Boom!

Ultimately, X-Men could be as big as Avengers (and so could the Fantastic Four and look what happened to them). I trust the MCU to deliver - fingers crossed!

Interesting re Iron Man, Ant Man, etc. I always thought the MCU works well primarily for the Avengers and these previously lesser known characters, probably because they aren't so "super".

Other comic adaptations may be better served as standalone. e.g. I don't see anything that was gained by DC rushing to copy the Marvel formula. I'd much rather have seen the Man Of Steel series continue like Nolan's Batman films rather than the stupid retconning to try and fit Batman into that storyline.

Similarly can't see what would be gained by throwing the x-men into the MCU and making everyone seem even less "super".

reply

Don't build the new MCU right away. Just let the last one set in and give the audience a break. Reduce the output and increase interest in coming back. As long as the quality isn't compromised by gimicks, it will do fine. Also, get rid of the nostalgia milking we see from Star Wars.

reply

I don't see them doing that. They have release dates for two films planned next year and I think three films every year for a few years after that.

reply

... yep... no breaks means a flooded market. I don't see how they can recreate what they just finished. Then again, Im not a big fan of superhero movies.

reply

The thing is though that the MCU isn't finished. Just this saga of the MCU is and technically Spider-Man Far From Home is capping it off and not Endgame.

I'd be getting tired of it also, but what keeps me around is the quality of the film's being produced. There's only a couple out of the bunch that I personally don't care as much about , but still thought they were decent enough. It gives me a little something to look forward to.

reply

I hope you enjoy it. Tonight, Ill be watching "the dead don't die." The reviews aren't great. But, it'll be better than the day of the 2008 dead... i hope.

reply

I'd like to see that one too, but it's not at the theater where I live. Hope you find it entertaining at least.

reply

It had some laughs. But, its not great. Wait for Netflix

reply

I think the X-men has run its course. They switched out everyone and done several films with these younger, re-cast versions of everyone. I'm tired of X-men. I'm not seeing Phoenix or whatever it is called. I'm tired of that series now and no longer care about the new actors.

I think they should just retire it now.

reply

I don't plan to see Dark Phoenix either, but I'm certainly not tired of the X-Men. I'm just tired of them getting bad adaptations like the Fantastic Four.

reply

What the MCU will probably do is just wait it out until Avengers becomes old news and then focus on the X-Men mixing in Avengers characters little by little.

Even in the comics the X-Men and the Avengers feel like they are in different universes even though they appear together every now and again. When you are reading one you're not really thinking about the other. Thats probably how the MCU will handle it for the most part but will have them kinda/sorta teaming up once in awhile.

reply

answer you question: they could introduced them in a big MCU movie. for explain: Captain America civil war.

but what about the Fantastic 4??

reply

If they do it like that they could do a Secret Wars thing and just say they were pulled out of an alternate dimension. That way you don't erase all their history.

I feel like they could already exist in that universe, they just haven't got their powers yet. Who's to say they didn't buy the old Avengers tower to use for the Baxter building?

reply

If we're talking films...they shouldn't. The X-Men can barely contain its own plot- and time-lines in the film world, and it works much better away from the MCU, doing its own thing, because it takes different and bigger risks and isn't afraid to fail.

However, they can always link the TV X-Men shows to the MCU shows. I think they kind of have - I know in Cloak & Dagger, one of the characters referred to Luke Cage. Daredevil Matt Murdock can make some appearances in Jessica Jones and wherever needed, even if Daredevil is over as a show.
