Why the obsession with BO numbers?

Anyone?

reply

In any fandom you will find a few oddballs with a statistical bent. Tracking BO numbers is "fun" to some because film making is such an unpredictable business endeavor

Box office gross tracking, in modern times, is reserved mainly for event films. Which is increasingly becoming a euphemism for shitty sci-fi/action films. which means that only the most autistic of viewers will put serious effort into keeping track of this kind of shit

So yeah. Executives at studios making millions every year to keep track of shit shit, and autistic fans living near poverty, are the two parties that care about this shit. Neither of these two groups are understandable to the common person, so its better to not ask the types of questions that you are asking, OP

I wouldn't call it an obsession for myself but it is another metric that defines a part of the movie industry that denotes several things about movies, films, audiences, habits, trends, fads and behaviors.

Box office is nothing more than tickets, a ticket represents a person. You've now tapped into an activity that expresses a lot about vasts groups of people.

And I hope I don't sound ignorant and ableist against those who suffer from any form of Austism Spectrum Disorders. I am ignorant and stupid myself, so none of my opinions should hold any weight

I just mean that only a small population of people care about the numbers that movies make.

reply

I wouldn't call it an obsession. I'm sure with some people it is, but that is a tiny number of people. For most of us it's like any spectacle-- it's of interest for its grandeur. When a movie comes along and demolishes records as Endgame has, especially records set in times when it was easier for films to generate revenue, it's interesting.

Yes...i love to follow box office reporting and discuss the numbers.

So what?

I have a question for all of those that ask "Why do you care about box office?"..."Why do YOU care what WE care about?".

Seriously, there are many threads discussing many different aspects of the film. Join those and/or start one of your own interest. If you aren't I retested in threads about box office then simply IGNORE THEM. It's quite easy to do...you don't click on them and read them.

No need to get defensive, I am just curious why you guys make a big deal about it.

reply

So now that you have seen a fair amount of posts what is your takeaway, or was the question just a rhetorical question and you didn't really care one way or the other?

Seriously, what did you glean from these responses?

reply

For me, it's just a way to see that people enjoy these films and as a lifelong comic book fan (any comic book, DC, Marvel or whatever) I love to see mainstream media liking those films.

Also, really good Box Office means more movies for me, with a better budget and more awesomeness!

So to sum up, great BO = More movies for me .

I wonder the same thing. While it’s nice that my favourite movies do well since it means they will get sequels and everything but if some other movie makes a few million dollars more than the movie I like, who cares?

reply

I don't get it either. Everybody knows MCU films will do well, I don't care if movie A surpasses movie B or if movie C has a "huge" 2nd week drop.
