In Your Opinion are The Russo's now The greatest CBM's Directors of all time?

obviously Everyone is going to have different opinions...

But I think with Endgame Russo's just cemented themselves as The KINGS of the CBM genre in The court of Public opinion and In The Majorities opinions...

and what I specifically mean is...Over the next 5 year +....I think In The Majority of Articles and Polls, The Russo's Will Overwhelmingly be credited/voted as The best CBMs directors of all time.

I think Nolan was the clear Majority favorite Until Now....

but simpy put...The Russo's now have the RARE "4" CBM movies in The Winter Soldier,Civil War,Infinity War and Endgame thats Quality is Unmatched...

Singer had 3 Great CBMs

Nolan has 3 Great CBMs

Snyder had 3 Great CBM's......(LOL just joking, couldnt help but LAUGH at Snyder's Disastrous Trilogy of DCEU films...although 300 and Watchmen IMO are good)

IMO Guillermo del Toro deserves to be mentioned with his 2 Hellboy movies

I also Personally would like to Mention M. Night Shyamalan's Who IMO Made 2 ALL TIME Great Superhero movies in Unbreakable and Split and Then Made 3/4 Of another good Superhero movie in Glass before shitting The Bed beyond belief with the ending

and Then we've obviously got some ALL TIME greats that hit astonishing Heights in CBMs Genre like -

Mangold with Logan
Tim Miller's Deadpool
Ryan Cooglers Black Panther
Jon Favreau's Iron Man 1
Donner's Superman and Burton's 2 Batman's film
Robert Rodriguez's Sin City 1
Whedon's Avengers 1

There are clearly Directors that all deserved to be Mentioned for Taking The Genre to new and never before seen heights with 1 film.....or 2 Films.......and In a very few rare cases 3 films

But The Russo's have completely separated themselves now with 4 CBM's that ALL Reached Near the highest possible Level in Quality...

for me....

1. The Russo's Brother
2. Nolan
3. Mangold(I just have that much love and respect for Logan)
4. M. Night Shyamalan(I truly think Unbreakable is one of the greatest films ever made, Loved Split)

what are your thoughts...

Do you have The Russo's as The Definitive #1 now?

If not, do you at least agree, The Majority Will now see them as The Greatest?

also what are your top 5 CBM directors?

reply

No ....there are better CBM than Endgame...

reply

No ....there are better CBM than Endgame...

^^^

I kinda shocked by this response?

did you even remotely understand The point of this thread?

It has nothing to do with Endgame....

No where did I say Endgame was the greatest CBM of all time...

This thread has to do with The Russo's and their 4 CBM's combined....

are The Russo's now The Best CBM directors after Making 4 of The Greatest CBMs in The Winter Soldier,Civil War,Infinity War and Endgame...

This is not about what you believe is the greatest CBM....

Its about, is there a better track record than The Russo's?

Do you consider 3 Great Nolan films Better Than 4 Great Russo's films....

Do you consider what Mangold did With Logan even more impressive than 4 Great films by The Russo's

Theres no wrong answers here....

except the one you gave. which truly suggest you didnt in the slightest understand the concept of this thread.....

If you dont feel Russo's are The best, fine....

Just respond with a coherent response to the actually questions in The thread...

Endgame as a film has nothing to do with this thread or the question...

I'm truly stunned by your complete lack of understanding what going on here....I literally sat my computer for like 5 seconds trying to figure out if your trolling or you really just had no clue what you were responding to.....WOW!

reply

Geez relax. Lmao.....I'm not trolling. The only only film I like that the Russo's did was Winter solider. It my favorite Marvel Film. Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame were all overloaded films imo. Out of those three I would think Infinity was the best. The other two I can do without. So I really only like one of their films. The others are pretty much MEH to me......so no they are not the greatest CBM directors imo....

reply

My top 5 CBM directors:

1. The Russos
2. Nolan
3. Singer
4. Burton
5. Shyamalan

i'll come back tomorrow when i'm a little more rested and perhaps put together a ranking of directors, but i think i would comfortably rate the russos at the top.

the only reason i might not, and that they may not come to be recognized as great, is that they don't really seem to have a distinctive voice or style, the way one might say that nolan's batman films do. that said, i don't think that has to be seen as a true negative. in the action/cbm world, it's often a forum for directors that are workmanlike, focus on craft over having a distinct vision.

people might disagree, might think the russos have their own style & vision. i'd say they're excellent craftsman, & they've made four of the best films of their kind, & i think you have to rate that & give them their due.

You can tell that this thread was started by someone on the autisitic spectrum, even without the formatting problems.

The Russo’s have zero personal directorial style or flair. Their films are literally like watching a child shake a box of toys around.

If the Russo’s hadn’t made these films, somebody else would have... and, as part of an already popular series, they’d still have made a ton of money and then you’d be saying they were the greatest comic book movie directors of all time.

Great counter-argument. I hope you follow it up with something really witty like “don’t be upset”. That would devastatingly intelligent...

LOL

I thought so , don't be upset.

Hahaha I know right, we all laugh at you , lol

The Russo’s know to stand back, be invisible, and let the source material take centre stage. They bring it to life perfectly.

Marvel and James Bond don’t need wanky auteurs drawing attention to themselves, they need egoless craftsmen who will honour the source.

reply

>Their films are literally like watching a child shake a box of toys around.

Yet their action scenes are followable and don't turn into a video game mess with no spatial awareness.

And they carved a character into a CGI bad guy making him one of the best villains in movie history.

>If the Russo’s hadn’t made these films, somebody else would have

If Nolan didn't make Batman somebody else would have and it wouldn't be as good.

And it would be something else entirely, like the Justice League.

reply

Seems like a pointless contest. While they are fine filmmakers. I would probably put Logan and Batman Begins over most of there MCU movies. Especially this one. I mean this movie was a convoluted mess.

reply

How could they not be is what I say. Yes, without a shadow of a doubt. By far. The Russos have earned that title. Hell, I began to feel that way ever since Civil War. But if Civil War alone didn’t convince me, then once Infinity War came along, I knew right away this duo were in a league of their own. With a gigantic film that could have easily turned out to be a mess (naysayers belonging to the minority... away!), they managed to craft a masterful film that felt like a comic book come to life. It was a visceral, magnetic, exhilarating, heart-pounding and visual spectacle that, in my eyes was, like nothing we’d ever seen before.

Nolan? What he achieved with his trilogy was magnificent (mainly the first two films), but for all of their strengths, Nolan’s films nonetheless felt a little too... constricted and, dare I say, not very comic-y. “Aww hell no!” No, not every comic film has to be part of a shared universe and have fantasy and sci-elements in them (I understand Nolan made a big impact with his films and the direction he took was refreshing). But one of the many reasons why I’m far more impressed with what the Russos did, is they essentially covered so much more ground - and that’s just with Civil War. For one thing, they took on more genres in a single film, e.g, everything from political thriller to science fiction. More importantly though, the Russos brought an entire UNIVERSE to life... and they did it brilliantly.

What’s more, The Winter Soldier-Endgame weren’t only fantastic technical achievements that transcended the CBM genre from a narrative and filmmaking standpoint (you read that right), but as grounded as they could feel, they weren’t afraid to be as comic-y as they NEEDED to be. IW & Endgame are jam packed with sequences that feel like a comic book come to life after, and they’re all beautifully crafted. That brings me to this duo’s knack for great character building: the way they juggled numerous characters, some from other galaxies that couldn’t be more unsimilar, was something many thought wouldn’t be done right. Yet, the end results were sensational. Let’s also not forget the tone shifts in IW & Endgame that were handled with such expertise. Must I go on? Tbh, I rather not include Nolan in this discussion. However, given that his “realistic” DK trilogy continues to be seen as the cream of the crop of the superhero game by enough people (DC fanatics notwithstanding), it’s unavoidable to compare wildly different directors/films to his work.

Having said that, I thought Joss Whedon himself made a more explosive and grander CBM with The Avengers than Nolan did. The Russos? They only took things much further. And since the CBM genre is the topic at hand, I should mention that none of the fighting scenes in Nolan’s trilogy come anywhere close to the excellence of the expertly-shot and choreographed fight scenes in any of the Russos’ films. As a matter of fact, barring a few good moments, Nolan’s Bat fights could be pretty subpar in every way. The Russos, on the other hand, directed some of the most well-executed and memorable fighting scenes (from hand to hand combat fights to otherworldly team battles) in superhero/blockbuster history. Pompous dweebs that dismiss most action scenes and especially CGI can scoff all they want, but Marvel shouldn’t apologize for staying true to the exciting source material with the action.

And the Russos have no vision, I hear? Disagree strongly. I’ll just say this... when I see their Marvel films, I see their touch all over them. So all in all, I’ll gladly state that I KNOW the Russos will be regarded as the definitive CBM filmmakers for years to come. Dats right. Nolan will always have his devotees... they’ll make their presence known here... but in my view, right now everything suggests that the majority WILL be recognizing the Russos’ work as more significant and, yes, awe-inspiring. Sorry not sorry. I mean dude, whilst tons of exciting things are coming from Marvel, after Endgame I have to echo the sentiments of those who’ve sincerely wondered... where do we go from here? ;}

Now I could go on and om, but the bottom line is the Russos ARE #1. They knocked it out of the park with all 4 films, and their final one in this saga was, according to most (myself included), a stunning achievement. All their films were big achievements in their own right, if you ask me.

1. The Russos
2. Joss Whedon (Nolan showed us how great a superhero film can be, albeit Whedon imo MASTERED - what was at the time - the CBM genre back with the terrific Avengers. Besides, other than a handful of captivating sequences in TDK, e.g. Joker chase & truck flip, I find the entire Battle of New York to be a bigger achievement in the world of superhero/blockbuster cinema. I also see AOU as a superb-underrated entry)
3. M. Night Shyamalan
4. James Gunn
5. Christopher Nolan

Honorable mentions: Sam Raimi, hopefully Taika Waititi soon

“What Nolan achieved with his trilogy was great, but he brought HIS vision to the cbm. And by that I mean, his films for the most part felt like crime thrillers that happened to feature comic book characters. What the
Russos did, on the other hand, was bring an UNIVERSE to life. Their films transcended the cbm genre, but at the same time they MASTERED it.“

You’re penalizing Nolan for actually having a personal style and praising the Russos for something you can’t even articulate. Wtf

LOL

reply

So if I ask for a list of the best comedy directors of all time, and say "Nolan films are not comedies so he doesn't make the list", then I am "penalizing" him?

reply

Why would you mention Nolan’s Batman trilogy, a series of a films about the world’s most famous crime-fighting superhero, amongst comedies?

Whatever floats your boat...

LOL

Dark Knight Rises was shit and it was riddled with plotholes and teleportations, destroyed Bane as a legitimate threat because he was Talia's lil' bitch all along, all brawn, no brain. Fuck you Nolan.

I specifically hate the Russos and think they ruined Superhero Cinema more than Snyder ever did. Right from their debut with their barfy physics defying signature action scenes and unrelenting stale generic nothing film making style and vapid emotional resonance. Perfect film makers for a millennial generation. They ruined super hero movies forever.

reply

physics defying - superpowered humanoids. Wow, what a concept, right?

reply

You can't kick a guy hard enough to make a pickup truck fly across the yard. Your foot would tear through him in a bloodbath first. The movies are filled with this bullshit.

reply

No. I think they have done great work but remember none of their comic book films were responsible for pushing the envelope for suphero movies being mentioned for a best picture Oscar nomination.

The Dark Knight is what pushed this envelope. That is the very reason the best picture nomination got expanded. It was largely due to an outrage the dark knight did not get nominated in the first place.

Second they never achieved any major nominations such as screenplay actor etc for any of their comic book films. Spider-man 2 won the visual effects Oscar when it was released. Not a major win but it still won. Neither of the Russos movies even won technical awards.

In my book

Christopher Nolan great trilogy and made superhero movies actually be mentioned and considered for best picture awards.

Richard Donner the man who started it all. Full of memorable things he brought to the genre. Some plots still emulated to this day.

Sam Raimi he emulated Donner's magic nicely. Spiderman 2 has the best ending to a superhero movie ever in my book still gives goosebumps.

Rodriguez I still hate how overlooked Sin City is. This movie i fight is the best at literally not at adapting but translating the comic to the screen. The comic literally is on the screen.

Ryan Coogler achieved the best picture nomination. Although to be honest i don't feel Black panther should have been the movie to break this mold. Love the movie but I feel it got it because it was a safe my by the academy.

The Russos solid string of films. The main thing that helps them is consistency. I personally don't feel best against best they can compete against like Raimi but their worst is better than Raimi's worst.

Bryan Singer helped catapult the suphero genre for the modern era. Not to.mentiin xmen days of future past did the time travel thing before endgame.

James Mangold Logan is in my book the best performance by a suphero and the most personal story for a suphero ever. Hugh should have been the first Oscar nomination for a suphero.

Del Toro Hellboy 1 and 2 criminally overlooked. A slight shout out to blade 2 as well.
