The Ancient One...

*** SPOILER ***

We, as the audience, were privy to the fact that Dr. Strange viewed over 14 million possible futures (how could he even keep track of that....yikes) and that they only won ONE. Therefore when Strange turned over the stone willingly, we were to understand this is the way it had to unfold, the only future in which they were victorious is one where he gives the stone to Thanos. (I'm surprised Stark didn't realize that immediately).

The Ancient One wasn't privy to this but the instant she was told by Banner that Strange willingly gave the stone up, she changed her mind and gave it to him.

Are we to believe that she also instantly knew that Strange must have viewed futures and would have only given the stone if it were imperative that this occur?

Does anyone else have any other theories as to why she so quickly had an epiphany when told that Strange (who she wouldn't meet for 5 years) gave the stone to Thanos?

reply

She said something along the lines of "He must have had good reason to give up the Time Stone". Since she knew he was the best of them, she correctly figured he had a plan.

reply

She actually said he was MEANT to be the best of them

She was banking on his potential

He never became sorcerer supreme during her lifetime, so she could never see it happen

But she did, in her own words, see all his future possibilities

Minor detail - regardless it was awesome to see her on the roof swatting away Chitauri like flies

If you watched Doctor Strange, you would know that The Ancient One could see all possible futures up to the point of her own death. So she already knew that she would meet strange, and that he would become the sorcerer supreme. She would also know that he would be able to see possible futures with the time stone, as she had done.

I forgot about the Ancient One not being able to see the future after her death. That clears what I thought was originally a plot hole; I originally thought “why can’t she see the same thing?” Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Give up on trying to understand this mess of a movie. It wasn't well thought out..

I really don't care about anything, the fact that The Ancient One was here made me really happy. There's something about that character and the actress playing her. Of all the characters that were brought back, either by re-snapping the fingers or by time heist, I liked her the best. Nice to see her again, if only Marvel would make a prequel with Tilda Swinton.

Regarding your question, yes I'm sure she knew everything about Strange even though the two haven't actually met, and that if he willingly gave up the Stone he had a very good reason. So she trusted his judgement. It was obvious after IW that Stark had an important role in that one scenario when Thanos was defeated, otherwise Strange wouldn't trade his life for the Stone.
