Horrible Thor Plot Hole

Thor is basically a god of love and goodness. He can't pick up his hammer unless he does so with goodness in his heart.

Such a person would be extremely courageous.

Superman, for instance, has lost his powers and continued on trying to help people because he's not afraid to be harmed to do good. The definition of courage is to do something good when when you're afraid to do so.

Thus, a robot, like we have in reality, cannot be courageous because they aren't capable of fear. So, Thor was portrayed as a coward here. He lost to Thanos, got scared, and they crumbled into a slobbish, depressed, crazy person.

In this film, he's only okay with fighting evil if he's knows he's stronger. That means he's a coward.

Thor is not a coward and to show him suddenly as one is a plot hole as it violated the psychology of the character.

Lots of crap in this film, but I enjoyed it at the time. But, given time to think there was a lot of screwed up stuff.

I thought Thor was the God of War. Freya is the goddess of love.

God of Thunder

In the mythology and comics Thor is overtly the god of thunder, but Odin made it so that he can only lift his hammer if he is pure of heart and does so with love.

So, Thor can only do good and loving things with the his power, so he's a kind of god of love. In the old stories about him, he would always show up to help people, feed them, and so forth.

In the first Avengers, Loki makes him and the others argue. He says, "You humans and so tiny, and petty" and laughs at his friends. Later, he crashes to Earth and has trouble picking his hammer up. That's because he was getting mean spirited and so then he loses his power.

That may be the Norse mythology, but that is not how Thor is portrayed in the comics, or the MCU

reply

He even says that in the movies

reply

Yes Thor is portrayed that way.

In the first film he was sent to Earth for being a jerk and could use his hammer.

Above, I explained why he had trouble lifting his hammer after arguing meanly.

In the comics and myths, Odin gave him the hammer as a little kid. The more good deeds Thor did, the more he could lift the hammer.

Thor is not a person who would become fearful or a coward.

He was stripped of his power and banished for starting a war with the Frost giants, not for being without a pure heart or love. Thor WASN'T a *god* who would become fearful, unless he was defeated by Thanos and let half the universe die...

reply

Yeah , Hulk and Thor are my major complaints in this movie , they decided to depower them a lot because otherwise they would have obliterated Thanos in the final battle before he could reach the gauntlet , so the plot device to kill off Tony wouldn't have worked.

reply

Yes, it's sad to have a dramatic movie and then throw in these stupid plot devices.

There's many other ways it could have been handled

Like what?

For being comic book movies, MCU is actually true to the spirit of comic book. In comic books, logic and consistency often took the back seat. Comic books mostly prioritize well round up stories, symmetries, juxtapositions, what-ifs, etc. to inspire children, and entertain adults. They're not history books nor epic legends.

This is why I respect the MCU. They understand their comic books' legacy and spirit.

I thought Thor - Hulk chemistry (carrying on from Ragnarok and Infinity war) was one of the best parts of the movie. Especially seeing how the roles were reversed.

In Ragnarok, Hulk is having a crisis and Thor helps him out and gives him a purpose to get off his A$$. Then Bruce banner has a crisis in IW while Thor is at his strongest.

And finally, after the snap, Thor gets into crisis mode while Professor Hulk has resolved all his demons and is finally given a purpose by Prof hulk to get off his a$$ and feel needed

I thought the whole hulk-thor friendship arc was very well rounded up and given a very satisfactory conclusion here. Loved it

In any case, I got hooked into MCU because of these little moments more than the epic action set pieces

I've watched a couple Youtube videos that've detailed character arks, and its interesting to have them pointed out, all those little moments, even bits of dialogue that are easily missed and/or forgotten. Those little moments...there's a lot of them and going over them has really made me appreciate just how rounded out these films are as well.
Well said =]

If Thor fell apart it wasnt because he was afraid, I mean he'd killed Thanos, so he wasnt afraid of him before of after the chop.

No, I think he fell apart because a massive wrong had been done and for all his power he couldnt set it right. The problem was that he failed, and couldn't live with himself after he'd let half the universe down.
