Hulk being afraid of Thanos is unacceptable

Everybody is okay with this?

reply

It’s the first time he was TOTALLY outclassed. Even against Thor it was a FIGHT.

As long as he gets over it, I’m okay with it.

reply

Yeah, I know the reason being given, but making the Hulk afraid to even come out of Banner is just taking it too far.

reply

It's been confirmed the Hulk wasn't scared of Thanos. He was just tired of being used by Bruce just to fight and then taking a back seat. Probably made even more apparent after he had the drivers seat for two years between Age of Ultron and Ragnarok.

reply

Not sure where you're getting that, but that's an even worse excuse. The Hulk doesn't possess enough intelligence or reasoning to think like that.

reply

MCU Hulk isn't that unintelligent. And in Thor Ragnarok he did have some intelligence. He made it clear there that he didn't want to become Banner again in that movie. So it isn't that far fetched. Also in comics Hulk was somewhat intelligent even in the Stan Lee era. Comics Hulk has always hated turning back to Banner. And everytime Banner tried to control Hulk durring Stan Lee's run, Hulk would always come back again angrier than ever.

reply

This is a shit character arc.

reply

I don't think its crap so much as what marvel is forced to do.. problem is if you don't somehow neuter Bannon/Hulk you have people just say "why didn't they just get the hulk to fight and win"

he becomes this permanent deus ex machina and OP character

reply

You don't think he learned anything after being let out for two years? There's a lot of speculation it's building towards Professor Hulk and merges Banners brains with Hulks brawn so it would make sense.

Marvel just uses The Hulk as a punching bag to establish how “tough” other movie characters are.

It does this because it still shares the film rights to The Hulk with Universal, so Marvel can’t use the character for solo films. So why position a character they can’t mine for maximum profit as a top-tier power, “the strongest there is”, like in the comics?

Thus, he sucks. They even gave away a good chunk of “Planet Hulk”, one of his most iconic storylines, to Thor...

reply

It figures studio politics are behind this character assassination.

reply

It's garbage. Hulk never even comes out in this movie either.

the given narrative reason is that Hulk is tired of being used by Banner whenever he feels like it as a tool of some kind.

when I saw it I thought that Hulk knew something about the future and knew he needed to save himself for later or something; or maybe that it had something to do with Loki being able to have save himself somehow (hiding in Hulk's shapeshift but that makes no sense.)

but I think that the real reason is that the writers try to change up their characters each movie as much as they can. You can see this a lot with Thor, always having a new style each movie. Hulk especially has had all kinds of different versions to keep him interesting:

- comes out when Banner gets angry (Pre avengers?)
- Banner is "always angry" and can summon Hulk on demand (Avengers 1)
- can't remember Age of Ultron
- Thor: Ragnarok: Hulk is in control and there's little to no Banner
- Infinity War: Banner is in control and there's little to no Hulk (Hulk refuses to emerge)
- Endgame: Banner is in Hulk form with no Hulk personality

reply

Yep. The Hulk is a nigh indestructible monster, so for Thanos to dispatch of him easily lets you know early in the film that he's someone to take seriously. It effectively sets the tone of the film by making the stakes feel more real.

So yeah, you're probably the only one. I mean maybe nine or ten people might disagree.

reply

I hated it.

However, it's within the character of the Hulk to have that be possible. The Hulk is a creation of Banner's mental problems. He will do whatever Banner actually wants and that's why we've had intelligent Hulks and whatnot in the comics.
