How strong is Thanos without the gauntlet?

And how much of a threat would he be? Like, is he on Captain America's level? Loki's?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, not a comic book reader.

reply

He's really kind of above Thor level without the gauntlet. There's a great two parter in a Marvel Team-Up/Marvel Two-In-One set of annuals where Thanos takes on the Avengers, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and the Thing and is holding his own (ewwww!) until Adam Warlock appears.

reply

He's extremely strong.

Remember he put a beat down on Hulk, no less. Not many beings can match his physical prowess or intellect. I think above Thanos, you'd be looking at Celestials, Heralds of Galactus, Galactus himself, The Beyonder, Infinity, Eternity, Eon and most of the magic beings like Dormamu or Mephisto who could defeat him. Perhaps the only human mortal that could beat him in some fashion would be Doctor Doom.

Interesting in comic book history, Thanos's own mother tried to kill him when he was born, due to his monstrous size and skin color. His father made him fight with his siblings (thus the reason he made his own children fight each other), even though the young Thanos was a Pacifist. It was his search for real meaning that brought him to look at Death as a pure being and worship it. And the Titan that he was born on is the same moon of Saturn that we call Titan, at least in the comics.

Anyway, I'm getting off on a tangent.

He's in the Top 15 of strongest Marvel characters for sure.

reply

But he had the Infinity Gauntlet when he beat Hulk, do you think 'base' Thanos is also stronger? Comic book characters are often less powerful in movies compared to the comics. It makes me wonder how someone like Nebula was expecting to kill him, if he's above Thor/Hulk level.

reply

I don't think that the Power Stone was active when he fought the Hulk. He was just having his fun.

reply

I watched the movie again, it is very clear to me he was using the Power Stone. Why wouldn't he?

Later in the movie Thanos says Nebula almost succeeds in killing him. How could that be possible if Thanos was so powerful? Nebula can't do anything to Hulk.

reply

The stone wasn't lit up when he fought the Hulk so it was not active.

reply

So I did an extra bit of homework. Thanos is an "Enternal" which is very long-lived and powerful race. The reason he was born on Titan, is because it was a colony world of the Eternals. The Enternals were not native to the moon of Saturn.

reply

Thanos is a Titan, a race that is probably comparable to Asgardians, being many times stronger and more durable than humans.

But Thanos is a mutant among the Titans. His strength is many times that of a Titan, putting him in the Hulk's class even without the Infinity Gauntlet.

Definitely much stronger than Cap.

reply

Well, in the Marvel universe he's a Class 100+

Unlike Hulk, who gets stronger the angrier he gets, Thanos does top out at some point.

In the movie scene where Thanos beats Hulk, we can assume that Hulk (for some reason) didn't get angrier once the fight began...perhaps he was in shock at how strong Thanos was, and he was knocked out before he could amp his strength.

reply

A THOUSAND times stronger than Cap. Or so I’ve heard.

With that in mind, seeing Cap hold back that Infinity Gauntlet punch is a real jaw-dropping moment. Yeah, Steve was never real a match for Thanos but you have to admire his own strength (I’m sure Thanos did as well) and... heart.

reply

Without the power of the IG, I doubt he's a thousand times stronger. But yeah, he's obviously ahead of him anyways. Cap or Loki were just examples, because I still believe he's not in Thor or Hulk's level without the help of the gauntlet.

because I still believe he's not in Thor or Hulk's level without the help of the gauntlet.

^^^

Based on what we seen in The Movie....

Thanos Is Stronger than Both The Hulk and Thor....

we open with Thor already Beaten by Thanos....

Then we see Thanos in what was a MASTERCLASS by The Russo beat the Hulk....

In this scene there are very important details that were specifically designed to show Thanos power and overall threat...

First we see Thanos Literally Out muscle Hulk proving Hes stronger than the hulk...Thanos grabs both Of Hulks wrist and Beats him in basically in a test of strength....The IG is Not active at this point, It is not lit up...

Then we get to see Thanos is Not Only Stronger than the hulk, But he may in fact be the most skilled fighter we've seen yet in all the MCU films....

Every Shot he lands on Hulk is A Calculated shot where he either dodges or uses Hulks momentum against him to land a Perfect counter shot....

again The was the absolute Perfect way to introduce Thanos and show his threat level....

It would be one thing to show Thanos wildly Beat Hulk(something similar to HULK rag dolling Loki in The Avengers)....But they specifically designed the scene to illustrate Thanos is a Skill and Trained fighter....

So Yes Thanos Without the IG is PAST Thor and HULKs level without the IG....He beat BOth Thor and Hulk at the beginning of AIW and didnt even break a sweat....

They showed Hes stronger than The Hulk, and Showed His Fighting ability is Beyond anything Thor or Hulk could dream of....

Thanos Is the single biggest threat ever put on screen in a CBM....

Alright then! I was convinced he was using the Power Gem, but I guess I was wrong. Still, I wonder how close was actually Nebula to kill him (Thanos' words), and what she tried to do.

reply

I think Nebula almost outsmarted him. I don't think it had anything to do with strength.

reply

The Power stone wasn't activated yes, but Thanos already absorbed the Power stone's energy when he put the stone on the IG. Not shown on screen since he already had it. As we can see he gets energy from the stones when he adds them to the IG. Therefore he was able to defeat Hulk and Thor with ease.

reply

Well, Endgame answered my question.
