Not bad... not great... somewhere in the middle.

Just watched this the other night at our local small town cute and quaint cinema.
I felt the first hour or so was flattish, hardly any humour and I wasn't gravitating towards Brie much, second half seemed to pick up, some humour started to flow, the comicbook vibe was kicking in and things just generally got better.

Some points;

- I thought they did great with managing to make SLJ look younger, however part of me feels they missed an opportunity here (same goes for Coulson here as well). When we saw him fight he got his ass handed easily, he actually kinda fought like an old man lol. It would have been nice to see him really kick ass, show the world why he got to be such a big shot in the later movies etc. I mean I know his strength is his brain, out cunning people, always being one step ahead etc, but you know... be nice to see a body double do some of the ass kicking scenes and just kinda amp it up a bit, Jason Bourne style.

- I find the rating system across the MCU a bit odd at times, I know my youngest was pretty traumatised at the end of Infinity War when folk turned to dust (especially Groot). I wonder how they slap a rating on a film, probably sticking to themes of swearing, drug use etc, do they ever really understand that just a simple plot aspect of a film can be difficult for some viewers? Anyway, in terms of this film it felt a bit like a U or PG rated film, too soft imo and quite a contrast to say Winter Soldier or Infinity Wars. I can't help feel this film would have been better if some of the one on one fight scenes had that harder action vibe like what Winter Solider/Jason Bourne films seemed to have, the action here just felt quite flat and not very memorable.

- Brie. Was she really best choice? I didn't think she did very well here, but then I don't think Chris Evans did very well in his first outing as Cap USA.

Well... there's my 2 cents. Worth watching but perhaps only once.

It's standard MCU fare which compared to most superhero movies these days is serviceable.

Brie was a poor choice. No charisma. Lifeless and boring.

She may be a fine actor but it didn't show here.

reply

She is not right for these type of movies.

Well SLJ was fighting a Skrull, he didnt really stand a chance. But I see what your saying there.

I felt the movie flowed as well as could be expected for an origin story, like you said with cap. I enjoyed it and my daughter loved it. 15 yo son enjoyed it as well.

The thing about Captain Marvel is she was trained as a Kree. She was taught to suppress emotions. Thats why the second half picks up when she gets further away from that training.

Anyways just my 2 cents.

I tend to think of it as one of the better Marvel films. There seems to be something about the humour in it that doesn't gel with a lot of people, but I found it pretty damn funny, especially Larson. And I also think Evans did okay as Captain America; I just didn't enjoy the film or the way the character was written.

Same for me. Was not as bad as I expected but still a net minus to the MCU for me, and dampened my hype for Endgame. I'm surprised it's doing so well; I'd guess it's mainly due to its close ties to Infinity War and Endgame.

It was boring, Captain Marvel herself was unlikable and kind of a jerk, Fury went from coolest character in the MCU to a burbling doofus, Tesseract was retconned, and most of all it introduced a god-tier character right at the end of 10 years and 20+ movies of world building, who seems poised to swoop in and more or less singlehandedly save the universe. But maybe I'm wrong and that's not how Endgame will go down.

(Incidentally kind of amusing thinking on why she had to be canonically away this whole time -- fighting the Kree, or because her presence would have negated the reasons for all the other characters and movies up to now.)

My 2 cents is about the same. I was psyched for this movie, and went on opening night. It was fun, just not as good as I hoped and Brie Larson...meh. She acted like she had somewhere better to be.

reply

Actually I think Larson was just playing a typical 80-90s action hero. You know: minimal emotions, semi-smiles, one-liners, tough as hell and everything. Didn't look all that out of place with all that 90s nostalgia trip.

The script on the other hand was pretty crappy but that's not on her.

If it wasn't an MCU film, then maybe it would just be bad. But we have come to expect so much more, and for the directors to come up with this crap despite all of the support from the experienced team at Marvel around them, means the film was a complete disaster. It's hands down the worst MCU film.

reply

Take away the expensive stuff, this would be an average '90s B action movie. Fun to watch when you have nothing better to do
