Pre-Release Endgame and Post-Release Endgame Bounce for Captain Marvel?

There are about 20 days to go before Avengers:Endgame inundates the theater landscape but will there be enough screens still available for Captain Marvel to maintain some momentum given all the other films in release? I could see some theaters relegating showings for Avengers:Infinity War as well as Captain Marvel. Some selected theaters are running all 21 films for the hardcore fans leading up to the A:E release date.

After actually seeing Avengers:Endgame I could see some residual interest in wanting to see Captain Marvel regardless how she performs in A:E. So far the Disney/Marvel marketing campaign and the positioning of Captain Marvel has been a boon that some detractors have attempted to turn into a negative against CM. "The only reason CM is gaining $1 Billion is that sheeple thought they HAD to see CM as a lead-in to A:E!" You know the refrain FOMO, Fear Of Missing Out.

I for one don't see CM ($364) passing WW ($412) as there isn't enough room in the schedule unless Disney and theater owners allow more screens for CM if profitable.

Thoughts?

This might have been called "Legs" in a normal release world but since there is this constant inspection of Captain Marvel's performance every aspect has a qualifier.

1.) Well it's only doing good because it's a Marvel movie.
2.) Well Disney bought a bunch of tickets.
3.) Well it's only doing good because audiences think they have to see it for Avengers:Endgame
4.) Well Charities bought a bunch of tickets
5.) Well it's gotten a boost because of "Girl Power" identity politics

Captain Marvel seems to continue to perform with all of this manufactured drama swirling around it regardless. CM still appears to track quite nicely to The Hunger Games.

Currently at $376 Million after 33 days in release CM will be in a struggle to reach $400 Million domestic if Avengers:Endgame snaps up all the premium screens. The Hunger Games had a 148 day run and netted $408 Million domestic for a final amount. If I were Marvel I'd leave Captain Marvel in theaters as a companion movie for Avengers:Endgame.

Well according to the Wrap CM did get a A:E Pre-Release Bump pushing the domestic total over $400 Million.

At this point it will pass Wonder Woman domestically for sure , since it will stay in theaters until mid May

reply

It'll get an even bigger bump by those that just turn up at the theatre and can't buy tickets for Endgame because its sold out for days, and will go and see Captain Marvel.

At this point, beating Wonder Woman domestically is an absolute certainty.

I got only one - pretty appropriate - thing to say: Marvelous

Marvel and Disney have proven to be quite savvy in the marketing and scheduling of most of their films. They have done everything to bring the most success to most of their titles and the actors.

This Captain Marvel positioning was brilliantly done and executed. The Black Panther model was sitting there and they duplicated it with Captain Marvel to no one's surprise. I also don't think that Marvel is worried about overly high expectations for their next releases and them NOT being as huge without an Avengers film on the horizon. I think they are willing to do the work but they have also increased their fan base and built up a degree of trust and loyalty.

Well observed. It’s damn remarkable what they accomplished with this franchise (truly unprecedented).
