Fun movie. Marvel does it again.

I give it a 7/10. Not great, but a solid entertaining action movie.

Don't avoid it because Brie Larson comes off as a bit over the top preachy in interviews. The movie isn't like that at all. About the only feminist thing here is that it features a strong female lead character. If you liked previous Marvel movies you'll probably like this one, unless you're a complete mysoginist. Then avoid it.

Except for those obnoxious flashbacks where Carol gets scolded by men because she's a woman. Or the shallow theme of the movie that basically says: Men hold women down.

There wasn't that much screen time spent on men giving her a hard time, and it makes sense that she'd have to deal with some opposition to being a fighter pilot, since it wasn't very common.

reply

It doesn't matter how much time was spent on it. The message was clear. And quite stupid. No dad would ran to its kid after he almost killed himself to scold him for how he shouldn't have done what he has done. Any rational parent would take his kid to a hospital if his kid would be covered in bruises and blood.

Yes, it is a fun movie. I give it 7.5/10

The thing is the amount of butthurt people showing lately. Almost a month after its release, and the Trolls/Haters are still twitching for its sore behind like there is no tomorrow. Man, the guys from Prep H. must be doing great business this month.

More like 5/10
Started good but got tedious and bland. Once Fury meets the cat, he turns into a bad comedy loop. Like a SNL skit that pounds the same joke over and over.
Not the worst Marvel movie but certainly the worst directed and least interesting.

reply

Fury's baby talk to the cat was funny at first but got old quick.

More power to Ms. Larson! Preachy? Sure, preaching (and practicing) equality+ representation and icky stuff like that. It’s something even studies have shown the majority of movie audiences are in favor of as well. Uh mu gawd! *now waits for the incel/alt barf misinformation*

Interesting though, guys like Chris Evans & Mark Ruffalo are arguably even more outspoken than Brie (they believe in the same good human things as her and are known to be more political overall), but yet... the anger fragile bro whincels direct at them is rather minuscule compared to the MCU’s newest big hero. Well, on second thought - one look at Ruffalo’s page and you’ll see the equal rights-hating “celebrities should shut their trap if they don’t share my hateful views” reich has been triggered by him big time. Hell, the same goes for Ms. Johansson herself... Can’t forget about all the times she’s made this same crowd lose their minds by being “over the top preachy”!

Point being? These actors, fortunately like so many decent people in general, care deeply about social justice+acceptance like superheroes actually do and as a result sociopathic whincels feel that their privilege is being attacked; they simply cannot stand for any of this. Bearing that in mind, I say keep preaching the good stuff that ass backward trolls - who want you to stay quiet unless u preach THEIR agenda - don’t support, Marvel fam!

Anyway, enough with the Hollywood-hating chud preaching ad nauseam (if only). This film rules! Even when Marvel makes a movie that isn’t considered top-tier by MCU standards (mind you, its real audience scores disagree with the narrative that’s being pushed), you still end up with a crowd-pleasing phenomenon. The MCU ain’t going nowhere and neither is Carol Danvers.

Great post!

Not sure how or why Social Justice became a pejorative phrase?

There is so little of anything that could be called Social Justice or Feminism in this movie and for the amount that IS there it is consistent with the times and specific to Carol Danvers' mere existence at even being an Air Force pilot. A point that wasn't belabored at all.

reply

I guess its fun. If you like to watching a emotionless protagonist with one facial expression punch shit. Then i guess its really fun.

reply

See I thought Larson showed plenty of feeling and humor.

reply

I also quite liked it and I'd highly recommend it. I don't find it incredibly preachy or Brie Larson's acting wooden at all. I'd say it was very feminist, but this didn't hinder my viewing pleasure even a little.

But if you don't like Brie Larson, then make a judgment call and watch or don't.

reply

The only time it got really obviously feminist was during the flashback scene when she was thinking about all these men who had discouraged her from being a fighter pilot. That was the closest it got to being preachy. It's really a pretty standard superhero movie for the most part, IMO.

reply

The thing is, I didn't find this to be particularly preachy. I could see it being in any movie or tv show where the main character is a man or particularly a child - I feel like lots of kids use bad memories as fuel to succeed or resist, especially female characters. I'm thinking Eleven from Stranger Things as an example. But even if it is considered preachy, I still like it.

reply

I agree!
