Did Disney make a clever move when they bought their own tickets?

It has obviously taken a toll, perhaps $50M or $100M. From a business point of view, though, protecting your franchise could be considered a clever move. Was it the right thing to do for Disney? Will it make a difference? Is gonna be the franchise damaged any case?

NOTE I'm aware that there's some negationist trolls out there. That's fine, you shouldn't be ashamed if you are, but please, don't flood this thread.

IMPORTANT EDIT The first page of this thread has been flooded by negationist sjw trolls :-( I'd recommend going straight-forward to the second page. There are way more interesting comments in that page.

Do you have any proof at all to back this up?

I don't think you've gone far enough in exposing the Disney shenanigans with this movie. I'd like to postulate that, like the moon landing, the movie Captain Marvel doesn't even really exist. They just filmed a few scenes to make some trailers and then bought out all the tickets at the theaters as you've said. Then employees come to boards like this one and pretend to have seen the movie when in fact, no real person has seen the movie because it was never made.

reply

Damn! I was going to go and see it this week as well. So, basically I'm going to be sat in an empty cinema, watching a thirty second trailer on a loop (which is the perfect set up for the punchline, "But how would you know the difference?").

It's not unheard of for celebrities and IP's to do deals to inflate ticket sales. Rihanna and Jay-Z come to mind who both made deals with samsung. Samsung were under contract to buy X amount of copies of their album's and then gave them away free to Samsung customers in a free download code for some promotion. Basically giving the product to customers who would not have bought the album and in doing so the album goes platinum when originally it may not have done so, making a product more successful than it probably should have been. This practise is quite common place in music, i receive free ITune and Amazon music codes from my mobile and broadband supplier.

Orange used to do free movie tickets on a Wednesday so in essence buying up tickets and inflating the numbers because of this and then giving them to customers for free for basically being a customer. Charities buy up tickets in bulk, so do companies and even Fandango themselves ran a promotion which gave customers free Captain Marvel tickets. Yes Fandango that owns Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney themselves may not be buying up the tickets but large companies do and give them away for free so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that such a deal in some form or another was done for Captain Marvel and many other movies for that matter.

I'd believe they bought their own tickets to scold the "alt-right trolls", they've gone into overdrive these past few years trying to remove their online presence. You can't trust any media, fabricated box office profits were and most likely still are a thing.

It's hard to believe movies are thriving more than ever these days, especially since it's been recognised by many that the quality has deteriorated. I know people but I don't know anyone who has seen this film.

reply

Yeap, and it's actually kind of logical. Marvel movies are the crown jewel in Disney. It'd be hard for them if they become the new Star Wars fiasco, for the company and (even more) for the headquarter.

However, they can't keep inflating numbers forever, it's too expensive. Brie was supposed to be the link between the old cycle and the new one, playing the same role than 'Iron Man' in the old cycle. If Captain Marvel was really successful, the movies after Endgame will succeed. Time will tell.

I searched and there is evidence of emptier theaters.

https://boundingintocomics.com/2019/03/13/new-reports-of-empty-theaters-at-captain-marvel-add-to-movies-controversy/

There's also a youtube video showing tons of people on twitter who have pix of the empty theaters.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eNUbk-fl51A

BOM says that to date CM made just $320m in the USA but almost $600m overseas? The big ODD clue to me was that in China, $89m was made the first weekend.

The reports about empty theaters in China are also everywhere, it's a marketing scam
https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-china-blog-45318316

My thought is that like Black Panther, the marketing budget was about $700m or more. It could have been $1B. We all know that movie accounting is complete utter bs.

The interesting thing is the Chinese theater earnings on these movies because I think they are completely fake as far as people going to the movies. As the BBC says, sell out theaters and no people.

BP's China earnings the first weekend was $65m <

Here there's another interesting video

This kind of fraud usually happen in chosen theaters. It's easier to buy a lot of tickets in a few ones, and the effect is some theaters completely sold out while other ones remain empty or half empty.

reply

wow, ty for that video.

reply

Kind of a stupid video, isn't it? The point being made is that showings on a Tuesday night at 9pm are nearly sold out, but not quite. The first one had a dozen unsold seats, another had 6... what's the point? Even hugely successful films like Captain Marvel don't sell out every showing in every theater, every night.'

Then again, you're the loony who thinks Marvel spent $700 million advertising Black Panther, so...

reply

Disney probably didnt buy there own tickets. But if they did. It would restore my faith in humanity that not everybody is fine with such mediocrity. But on the other hand. Transformers made tons of money.

reply

they just wanted to beat Wonder Woman for bragging rights
just like they re-released Endgame to theaters with a half finished post credits scene with the Hulk because they wanted to beat Avatar.
