The movie FINALLY broke even after two weeks

According to box office mojo, the movie is around $800M and it FINALLY broke even.

As a rule of thumb, the benefit is 50% of domestic and 33% of foreign. That would make $277/2 + $519/3 = $315M.

The budget was $300M ($150M movie budget + $150M marketing expenses). So as I said, Captain Marvel finally broke even, it took two weeks.

Of course, I'm using the official numbers provided by Disney. There has been many reports of empty theaters that could signal that Disney is buying tickets to cover movie's backlash. If they've used, let's say, $50M, which is a reasonable number, that would mean they'll need to reach $900M (supposed the same proportion domestic+foreign) ONLY TO BREAK EVEN.

I think you are off. The general rule of thumb is the production cost x2 plus marketing costs. Obviously international grosses are a bit lower than domestic totals but in a nutshell if there’s a budget of $150 million and a marketing cost of $150 million then breaking even would be $450 million. We passed that number a long time ago.

That doesn't make any sense. Disney buying the product they created is not a sustainable business model. Why can't you admit that this movie is doing well because people like it? There's no conspiracy.

reply

Actually, it does make sense. A flop could damage the whole franchise, specially if it's related to some backlash because of the movie being too political, and that could be far more expensive than buying tickets of your own movie.

Do you have proof of the buying seats ? My theatre was packed when I saw it

reply

No of course they don't, none of the antifeminist conspiracy hounds have any evidence of anything.

Title should read "Broke even in ONLY 12 days!"

reply

If you wanna be precise, that would 13 days. The movie opened in Thursday in some countries like China.
