PLot Hole/Mistake?

to those who have seen it, anyone can enlighten me as to why young Fury was able to call SHIELD as SHIELD while it wasnt until after events in the first Iron Man film Coulson was able to finally call it as SHIELD since Pepper made a fuzz about it ????

reply

Yeah, it’s a continuity issue. Even in the SHIELD tv show, we see they used the long form of the name.

I will readily admit to being an old school, OG, veteran of Marvel comics. In Iron Man Agent Coulson used the full name for the acronym of SHIELD because the name in print canon had changed a few times to match the times and the Charter:

The acronym originally stood for Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage and Law-Enforcement Division. It was changed in 1991 to Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate. Within the various films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as multiple animated and live-action television series, the backronym stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.
The organization has heavily appeared in media adaptations as well as films and shows that take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The gist being that Coulson had to spell it out because of the evolving nature of the organization's mission would not have been descriptive as just SHIELD.

Agent Phil Coulson: Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.
Tony Stark: Whew! God, you really need a new name for that.
Agent Phil Coulson: Yeah, I hear that a lot.

Again the point being it has always been called S.H.I.E.L.D. but it has stood for different things as it has evolved.

Marvel is welcome to use that to cover their, ahem, plot-hole/mistake?

Pepper Potts said it was a mouthful and Coulson said they were working on it. That doesn't mean they were trying to find an acronym such as SHIELD. More than likely it meant they were trying to find shorter words to fit within the SHIELD acronym. Also him simply telling her the word "shield" would not have clued her in to what they were about which is probably why Phil always opens with the long-form... which is indeed a mouthful.

In all likelihood SHIELD came first and they figured what words to fit into it later. I find it damn near impossible they weren't able to come up with the SHIELD acronym within mere minutes of creating the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division. If thats true then they all deserve to be overrun by Hydra.

SHIELD was created in the aftermath of WWII , we see that in Captain America Winter Soldier and the tv show Agent Carter (set in the 50's) , not sure why is that a plot hole

reply

Because of people misinterpreting the conversation between Pepper and Coulson in Iron Man.

Yep. I don’t see how the SHIELD acronym already being in use in Captain Marvel counts as a plot hole. It always existed — it’s words the acronym stood for that changed over the years.

But I do think that Coulson was just being Coulson back when he discussed this with Pepper, i.e. he was being coy with her or/and that’s how HE referred to SHIELD. In any event, there is a strong chance he was talking about the words the acronym stands for (gotta shorten them up!).
