Brie-ternatives

So I finally caught a matinee showing of CM. It had it's good points and bad. I would rank it near the bottom of the MCU films, but not at the very bottom. It was better than Thor 2, Ragnarok (I really hated the comedy overkill in that one) and The Incredible Hulk. Overall, 6/10. Decent entertainment.

Brie was miscast here. She certainly isn't desperate for work given the reputation she has in the industry, so I give her credit for taking a chance on a role like this.

It got me thinking -- who would have been a better Captain Marvel? Here's my list:

Maggie Q
Michelle Rodriguez
Alicia Vikander
Rebecca Ferguson

If she wasn't already playing Gamora:

Zoe Saldana

I've never heard of any of those actresses, but after a quick Google search of each, none leapt out at me as a potential Captain Marvel. Plus, after seeing Larson in the role it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the part. I thought she nailed it. She was funny at times, tough when she had to be, and carried herself like a soldier. And, she was believable as someone raised in an alien culture. She came off as half-Kree half-human. Then again, I rank Thor:Ragnarok among the very best of the MCU films, and loved the way the intellectual wit acted as a perfect counterpoint to the serious elements of the film. It felt to me like half Monty Python, half J.R.R. Tolkien.

How are you a film buff but have never heard of Maggie Q, Michelle Rodriguez, or Rebecca Ferguson?

reply

They aren't terribly famous, are they? None are household names.

I am looking at the imdb page of the first one on the list-- it looks like she's done mostly television shows, action films, and had a career in China. I don't watch any Chinese films, virtually no television programs, and rarely watch action films. Now I'm looking up Michelle Rodriguez-- she's know for the Fast and the Furious films, something else I don't watch. I have seen two of them, so I must have seen her, but I doubt I ever attached a name to the actress in the film and don't remember what part she played. And now, Rebecca Ferguson... I see she's known for Mission Impossible, and a list of other films I've not seen.

I guess the moral to the story is that one can be a film buff without knowing the current crop of women who co-star in action films, and/or without focusing much on the names and faces of the actors in the films I see.

reply

So you should probably change your screen name then if there is such a wide number of movies you don't watch? Especially if you don't watch any Chinese cinema at all.

reply

One can be a film buff while not watching action movies or Chinese movies. Besides, FilmBuffWhoIsntIntoActionFilmsOrChineseMovies was already taken when I signed up.

The guy is an idiot.

reply

Well, that would depends on what quota you want to cover with the next cast.

Michelle Rodriguez would make a wonderful hispanic diversity quota Captain Marvel.

If you're focusing in ageist discrimination, Jane Fonda would make a wonderful ageist diversity quota Captain Marvel. If you think that alternative-weight diversity is more important, Melissa McCarthy would be an amazing alternative-healthy weight quota Captain Marvel.

Though perhaps it's time to focus on cis-gender diversity. Chris Evan with bra and some filling would make a great trans diversity quota Captain Marvel. If your wanna add some racial quota, Idris Elba with bra and some filling would make a great trans racial-gender diversity quota Captain Marvel. :-)

Michelle Rodriguez just isn't that great of an actress to be honest. I've only seen Alicia Vikander in Tomb Raider which I thought she was good in, but I couldn't see her as CM. The other two names I either don't know or don't recognize.

I watched a video the other day that was evidently others who were in the running for the part being Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard, Emily Blunt, and some woman from the show Chuck. I think they really should've went with Emily Blunt. I'm hoping they'll snag her though to play Invisible Woman in the potential Fantastic 4 film.

Another thought for me is that it would've been cool to see Emma Stone in this role, but while she's a great actress, I picture her being a miscast as well.

reply

I think Jessica Chastain would have been a good choice.

reply

I don't think I can really have an opinion on that because I honestly can't recall anything I've seen her in 😅

reply

Too old.

reply

What reputation does she have?

reply

Let's see...she has 20 years of acting experience, has been a favorite of critics for many years and she's won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Actress. And all of this before age 30.

It's an enviable resume and I think she has a well-deserved reputation as a top actress.

reply

There's no alternatives , Brie Larson is Captain Marvel , they will no recast her , get over with it , when they announced she was going to play CM everyone said it was the best choice , now everyone complains , what a bunch hypocrites

@texasjack

Carol Danvers is a blonde caucasian female , are you suggesting an asian or black actress should play her ? I guess you never read any comics , what about a white blond black panther ? I'm sure you would agree with that

reply

I’m familiar with the comics. They’ve made a number of other changes for the movie so it wouldn’t bother me if CM wasn’t a blonde white female.

Emily Blunt

Larson didnt take much of a chance here. She had received critical acclaim in the past without banking much $. A lot of actors wanna get involved with these tent-pole franchises b/c of the money that mass appeal brings.

Good point.

Frankly i don't think most people even knew who she was before Kong Skull Island. And i didn't watch "Room" because it looks like a boring depressing movie that make Tommy Wiseau "The Room" look uplifting and inspiring. Why don't you just make a movie about boy with cancer, who loses his dog during the holocaust and then beaten and shot in the head by the Nazi. Also his mother has polio. But if she is such a great actress why is she so wooden and stilted in this movie. Shouldn't a Oscar Winning actress able to have more than one facial expression. Emma Stone has more emotional range.
