All these years I've assumed Fury lost his eye in some fight on a mission somewhere. They give me a CAT?

No, as you note in your subject line, it's a flerkin. (Or rather, a flerken as spelled in the comics.) :-)

Pointing out it's an alien doesn't make it any less silly.

Yeah, after the line in CA: TWS: "The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye..." I was pretty disappointed it was the cat who was responsible. Pretty lame, Milhouse.

I'm not even sure they came up with the idea. It was hypothesized the cat was the culprit by many in the online community the first moment the cat was shown. Its possible Feige decided to throw it in there to give them what they wanted.
