I kind of see Bill Maher's point about comics fans.

Imagine if this much attention was paid to politics or voting.

did you forget the shitstorm before the 2016 elections?

They are the worst, man.

For real? :|

Well, first thing’s first... do you honestly believe everyone/most people on here read comics? There are many (more opened minded) fans of these movies that don’t read comics to begin with. And I guarantee you a large number of these trolls attracting all this unwelcome attention, for example, couldn’t care less about these types of films and the characters in general. However, if there is a new target for the anti-social justice crowd a la The Last Jedi, you’ll see numerous non-fans join the party and continually troll places like this. Yes, there are also conflicted CBM/Marvel fans who can’t stand Brie - and most celebrities these days who preach basic human decency- and they want to keep things the way they were just like the trolls do, and thus they keep all these silly discussions going.

Now, sure, SOME of the things Maher said can apply to certain comic fans. But, the guy is a hypocrite. He singled out comic fans for their immaturity and what not, yet... last I checked sports fans are known to be some of the most crazily obsessed and juvenile bunch (Maher is a sports bro himself, so surprise!). How about Star Wars fans? We know how everyone from true fans to propagandists take their galaxy from far, far away so seriously. The truth is every fanbase has their immature bunch, period.

But the fans aside, it’s apparent he simply sees comics as lesser literature/art. [Wow, how I would love for Elijah “Mr. Glass” Price himself - Sam Jackson is a comic fan in real life - to give ol’ Bill a lesson or two! Hehe.] It’s all just kids stuff! When it comes to Football tho? Nah, that is a real big boy thing... now let’s go riot and cause mayhem out in the streets when our team actually wins! And since Bill loves the Playboy mansion so much, I guess you can’t call him out for being a horny nerd because to him that must still be better than a superhero nerd! Lol.

Here’s the main issue with Maher’s criticism... the whole reason he called out comic fans in the first place was because he was dumbfounded by all the love Stan Lee was receiving after he passed. He unapologetically downplayed the undeniable and long-lasting impact of Stan and all he stood for. In fact, Maher sounded very (prepare anti-SJW crowd!) *conservative* with his criticism. And this wasn’t the 1st time, either! Though he says a lot of good things, several times he has said and done things that have made him look like the grumpy “get off my lawn!” right winger he himself calls out.

So no, he didnt make a good point. He was coming from a place of jealously and pure smugness. And to reiterate, a lot of the activity going on here is troll activity. It’s well known the incelites are responsible for this toxicity infesting everything from video game culture to movies, and whenever a property they feel has always belonged to them dares to “suddenly” make social commentary and inclusion a thing (like the great social justice-loving Stan Lee always did), they lose it. They lose indeed.

reply

Good point about sports, they're pointless.

Comics are largely allegories that people find meaningful. It's why they don't want them messed around with because the stories mean something to people.

reply

I didn't know Sam Jackson himself was a comic fan, but Elijah Price's fandom was the highly credible, even respectable, to me. The fact that Price is fictional (and evil) doesn't undermine his reasoning.

I'm a Maher fan in general but he was 110% wrong on this

reply

Go to the gym, sissy.

reply

Bill Maher made a good point.

The fact that you typed out that longwinded reply to defend comics while criticizing football (LOL) pretty much identifies you as one of the dorks Maher was laughing at.

reply

Men do indeed have a bunch of juvenile hobbies:
Sports
Star wars
Cars
etc

all in the same league of "Pointlessness" , thing is Comics are at the bottom (or is it the top?) ie *most* stupid pointless activity.
except for wrestling of course.

reply

How is fixing cars juvenile?

reply

Let that soy boy tell his mechanic that fixing cars is pointless when his car breaks down.

reply

The only toxicity being spewed is by Hollywood to to the normal working class people in the "Flyover states" what you call trolls is just a response from the Hollywood venom being spewed

reply

Internet obsessives represent a very small percentage of people who see these movies. Most people are much more casual about it. They don't get all excited if Captain Marvel grosses more domestically than Aquaman.

reply

Nor should they. I love comics and comic movies but I never understood why people get that obsessed over numbers. If I like a movie, I want it to do well enough to earn sequels or at least so that the studio will invest in movies of the same ilk in the future but otherwise, I don't care if a DC makes more than a Marvel or vice versa.

reply

Maher hates Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Ergo, he's a racist AND a sexist. He can shove his pseudo-liberal politics and his pompous Milo rhapsodising, Playboy Mansion frequenting, Islamophobic BS up his a-hole.

reply

You're far worse than Maher. No such thing as Islamophobe.

reply

I'm worse than Maher?!? LMAO!

How so?

reply

"No such thing as Islamophobe."

Islamophobe definition: a person with a dislike of or prejudice against Islam or Muslims, especially as a political force.

reply

I guess Satan2016 never heard of Pamela Geller, Frank Gaffney, or Jeanine Pirro.

reply

I'm 100% certain that guy is either being satirical or trolling for outrage.

reply

The first part of the post was satirical (although it was a slight dig at Maher's pompous self-mythologizing as some sort of progressive liberal figurehead). One can dislike Black Panther and Captain Marvel without necessarily being racist or sexist (although I find it funny how Maher likes to blame comic-books for Trump, when many more people are attacking these comics and the films they are based on for supposedly being 'too progressive').

The second part of the post, starting "He can shove his..." was an entirely sincere attack.

reply

In current year, not liking a movie makes you racist...

reply

Just so everyone knows what we're talking about, here are some of Bill's comments:

“no way an attack on Mr. Lee but took the occasion of his death to express my dismay at people who think comic books are literature and superhero movies are great cinema and who in general are stuck in an everlasting childhood.”

“Bragging that you’re all about the Marvel universe is like boasting that your mother still pins your mittens to your sleeve,”

“Can we stop pretending like the writing in comic books is so good? Oh please, every superhero movie is the same thing: a person who doesn’t have powers gets them, has to figure out how they work, and then has to find a glowy thing.”

“And, again, there is nothing wrong with a man writing comic books,” he said. “There is something wrong with adults thinking they’re profound.”

gotta say i agree with him

reply

People just say he was attacking Stan Lee because it’s easier than refuting his points about comics being obsessed over by developmentally delayed adults.

reply

He’s absolutely right

reply

Congratulations: you're as confused as he is. Not sure why you took to a message board to broadcast that fact, tho. . .

reply

To the OP,

Bill Maher can say that about anything.

"Why do people play video games? They can spend time on politics and voting instead!"

"Why do people go to the gym? They can spend time on politics and voting instead!"

"Why do people watch movies? They can spend time on politics and voting instead!"

"Why do people watch sports? They can spend time on politics and voting instead!"

We have come to the conclusion that all free time should be spent on politics and voting.

reply

The world would indeed be a grey and boring place if it was 100% politics and voting .
We need art , recreation , entertainment and other inane and pointless distractions.
I just agree with Bill that superheroes are *the* most stupid and pointless, even though I am a sci fi fan , which most noramal people see as "stupid and pointless".
I guess we need the variety , including those pesky tights wearing flying idiots , to avoid everything being politics and voting .

reply

I can't blame some people I know for not voting. Cause although I vote I do sort of agree with them that most politicians don't really care about the people they're representing that much. Take here in Illinois. So many people hated on Rauner but I voted for him because unlike Quinn, he stated in his campaign that he wanted to push focus on the state's debt. But when he tried to convince the democrats who run the state and have been for the last 20+ years to focus on the debt, they instead wasted tax payer money on stupid ads to say that Rauner was wrong for doing so. But frankly as far as I'm concerned, the democrats running my state are in the wrong and instead of focusing on the billins of dollars of debt that we're in they instead just act like it's not there. And this isn't a new thing. It's been going on for 20+ years. I can understand not voting cause very few of the politicians in my state are even willing to admit the state of Illinois is even in debt.

reply

Maher is a piece of garbage. Let's see him debate anyone outside the confines of his studio and his paid off audience.
