Lost in the online culture wars

On one side, you have a bunch of psychos who think this film is too “SJW” or hate the Marvel brand because they prefer a rival comic book brand.

On the other side, you have people who think the best way to defeat trolls is by throwing money at Disney, a multi-billion dollar monolith, and seeing their brand triumph at the box office. These people are equally as weird.

In the middle is “Captain Marvel”... IMO, a bland film that isn’t even being evaluated on its technical merits or failings because one side is already screaming that it’s “the worst” and the other that it’s “the best”.

It reminds me of when Paul Feig’s “Ghostbusters” was released.

It’s totally frustrating how film fandom and the critical evaluation of cinema has been warped by online culture wars and social media.

That's what the "ignore" function is for

Works better here than on IMDB because there are so few of us

That's got to be one of the stupidest things anyone has ever said about a movie. People go to see a movie because they want to see it.

They're not a majority or even a critical mass of viewers. Not enough to affect box office. But I think OP's point is more about criticism. It's hard to know which reviewers to trust because they tend to be part of the tiny minority invested in the culture wars.

A perfect example of this was "pansexual" Lando. This was explained hilariously in the Half in the Bag review of Solo:

Uh huh. Hit a little close to home, eh?

It's not like I've literally seen people say "I'm going to watch it 3 times just to piss off you trolls" or anything.

Agreed 110%.

The studios rely on these fandoms to hype the movie so it's not going away anytime soon. Twitter is the worst of all, it's all just endless praise from the usual suspects, all "haters" are "alt-right trolls" and "Russian bots", go see this movie if you want to show them who's boss!

You know, I think these people might have a point, maybe they are Russian bots created by studio heads. That's a conspiracy theory though so not acceptable.

Agreed BrunoAntony.

I made a similar point in this thread: https://moviechat.org/tt4154664/Captain-Marvel/5c8361b75bff2a072d4fecba/If-the-alt-righters-and-MRAs-hadnt-badmouthedtrolled-this-movie

All the culture was silliness surrounding these movies often overlooks the fact that by-and-large these films are mostly above-average, rather than woefully bad or spectacularly good.
