First 2019 hit

It's sad we'll have to wait till March for a +100M domestic opener. Not only that but the other movies so far have barely limped their way past the overall domestic 100M mark, Glass is there with 105M but won't get far, Upside but that's a big maybe, Alita doing decent numbers but still a flop domestically, Lego Movie even a bigger flop so no.

The CM's OW predictions are at the moment around the 100M figure but almost all the reviews are positive (true those are not professional critics but it gives this movie a buzz) and that anti-Brie Larsson campaign is counterproductive for their authors. The projections will go up the closer we get to March.

I think it’s more about how well CM does after the opening weekend. It could do 120-140 opening weekend but drop off huge the following weeks. CM needs the over seas numbers stay big.

reply

I think it will earn more domestically than worldwide, non-americans aren't that sensitive about PC. It will probably drop around 60% but that's expected for these type of movies. What comes after the 2nd weekend is what matters the most, if the movie is any good it will have legs. Who knows maybe the movie is good, it's difficult to trust the reviews (even those made by professional critics) because of the nature of this movie.

Glass is a huge hit with its budget just 20m

reply

Glass is a success but not a hit. Split earned more both domestically and worldwide on a much smaller budget. Glass earned very decently but still its reviews were mixed at best. So no, that's not a huge hit, not by any count.

It may not open to 100 million(most animated films don't) but I think you're forgetting about a little film called How to Train Your Dragon 3.

It's shaping up to be a worldwide monster. Further evidence of Universal's dominance in animation.

reply

How to Train Your Dragon is a monster success so it's easy to overlook another solid performer...The Lego Movie 2.

Now...granted...it's opening was weaker than expected but since then has held like a champ. It"s enjoying the kinds of holds many expected for Ralph Breaks the Internet and/or Mary Poppins Returns but never got.

This weekend will be telling as it is going up against yet another Universal Animated juggernaut.

reply

Yeah, death of a franchise, that's solid :/

reply

Look...if you are expecting every animated film to perform like Universal's you're going to be disappointed. Now that they own Illumination AND DreamWorks they are an unstoppable force.

Having said THAT...Warner Brothers is still staying in the game because they produce their films with responsible budgets.

Thare's room for both to thrive.

It was somewhat fun reading your posts for a while, but you're going on the "ignore" list ;)

Why are you putting me on ignore?
