This ain't no Wonder Woman box-office wise.

Remember the fervent excitement leading up to that smash?

There's like zero of that going on for this. The real shame is I'm sure the budget is huge just like every Disney film.

At this point, this may be looking at Ant-man level numbers.

reply

Queen,

Ant Man had a $57 Million Opening Weekend

Ant Man had a $130 Million Production budget

Ant Man finished with $519 Million Worldwide and a 35%/65% split Domestic vs International for an unknown character.

Ant Man had a healthy profit for Disney/Marvel.

This is your marker, your estimate, your prediction for Captain Marvel?

Are you going to make a DceuFanticArmy type bet with yourself on this box office predicition?

reply

I'm not really surprised. Captain Marvel isn't that interesting a comic book character and oh god, the actress playing her....

reply

I'm hearing a lot of this kind of sentiment and it's troubling...especially about Brie Larson.

The feeling is that this could really underperform.

reply

Let' see what Scott Mendelson has to say as he 'professionally' chimes in on Captain Marvel and Disney:

We are 50 days out from the March 8 release of Marvel's 21st movie and Disney's first domestic release of 2019 (they are distributing Glass overseas). I've been a bit hard on the company, especially considering they made around $7 billion in global box office last year, but I still think Walt Disney, especially after this year, has to figure out how not to be so reliant on superheroes for their global triumphs. Of the $7b grossed via 2018 releases, over $5b was from superhero movies (Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2 and Ant-Man and the Wasp).

Moreover, most of their non-superhero stuff (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Mary Poppins Returns, Christopher Robin, A Wrinkle in Time, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Solo: A Star Wars Story) either underperformed or outright flopped here and/or abroad. The good news is that it's possible that Disney will make so much money this year (Captain Marvel, Dumbo, Avengers: Endgame, Star Wars 9, The Lion King, Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, etc.) that they may be able to essentially coast in 2020. But by the end of this year, Disney will have to make some choices as their live-action fairy tale flicks franchise uses up its biggies, the first super-arc of the MCU comes to an end and Star Wars has to reassert itself as the Skywalker/Solo saga concludes.

There are worse problems to have, but that's partially why Disney is willing to roll the dice on rebooting Pirates of the Caribbean (or at least offering a Jack Sparrow-free sequel), as they haven't had luck with "new" live-action franchises since National Treasure. The other good news, back to the movie at hand, is that Captain Marvel is arguably the sweet spot of what Disney has been doing right since 2013, namely creating big-budget action fantasy entertainments for young women, with the "bonus" being that this specific offering is in the super-safe genre of superhero movies.

I still take issue with those throwing around Black Panther (or even Wonder Woman) numbers as guestimates for this Brie Larson sci-fi flick, but that's because I don't want it to get tagged as a miss if it "only" makes about as much as Doctor Strange ($232 million domestic/$677m worldwide). And really, unless it's received as poorly as Watchmen and Green Lantern, there aren't a lot of truly "bad" scenarios. At the very least, as a result of Black Panther steamrolling six week's worth of big action fantasy tentpole movies (Tomb Raider, A Wrinkle in Time, Red Sparrow, Pacific Rim: Uprising) last year, Hollywood has given Captain Marvel a comparatively long runway. Heck, the only other "big" movies in March and early April are Walt Disney's own Dumbo on March 31, WB's Shazam on April 5, Paramount/Viacom's Pet Semetary on April 5, and Universal/Comcast and Jordan Peele's Us on March 22, the latter two of which are lower-budget horror flicks that are aiming for (at best) A Quiet Place results. That's how it is this year, with the pre-summer biggies each getting the month mostly to themselves. It's Glass in January, LEGO Movie 2 in February, Captain Marvel in March and Shazam in April.

Yeah, Avengers: Endgame opening in late April mucks that up a little, but c'est la vie. That's good news for the non-tentpole stuff (as once you've seen the biggie you have time to see the other stuff), but it puts each "big" movie in a position of having to essentially hold up the month by itself. If you recall, when Furious 7 got delayed to April of 2015 and Maleficent switched from July to May after Good Dinosaur got delayed to November of 2015, the relative domestic underperformance of Transformers: Age of Extinction caused the entire summer to "slump" compared to 2013.

The MCU will be fine, and female-led comic book movies are the future no matter what, so the only thing Captain Marvel might have to save is the month of March.
Does that "jive" with your feelings?

That article was a big "So what?". I've been saying that CM could do Doctor Strange numbers domestically if all goes well. I wouldn't expect much more, though. This isn"t capturing the cultural zeitgeist like Wonder Woman and BP did.

He does make a point of how horrible Disney is doing outside of Marvel. I've been saying that for years now and don't be surprised if Dumbo is yet another super-expensive under-performer/money-loser.

What an odd reply. An article that supports you is brushed off as a "So What"? Did Scott not demeaning BillBrown in the article throw you off or something?

I still would like to know why you detest Disney so much? You claim to like them but constantly ride them over money and alleged Boxoffice performance and not film quality. What is it that you would want them to do that would satisfy you? What is it that you want from them? I'm just curious.

You'll trumpet and shout hosannas and praise for Ready Player One but troll Black Panther. What is the deal?

I mean you're already going after Captain Marvel as inadequate as compared to WW. What does WW have to do with CM? Did you compare BP to WW? Oh yeah you did and your trolling was summarily rebuffed.

What has Disney done to you? Did you own their stock once and sold it too soon to reap a tidy profit? Why are you so bitter against Disney?

reply

Sorry...I thought you were posting that article to refute me.

I like to follow box office and Disney is the most fascinating to discuss.

reply

Citations can either refute or support. Within a given citation both are possible. I only engage with you to determine if your statements are based on data, references or facts or just wishes, beliefs or hope.

Your fascination that you allegedly have for about or with Disney is always expressed as a negative.

I have yet to ever read a post of yours that praises Disney/Marvel for getting anything right.

And with that.

I'm done.

You don't discuss you just post and drift from Disney/Marvel film board to film board predicting Gloom and Doom. There is no lively debate or even Box Office performance discussion with you, and your most important activity right now is a "Waiting for Godot" - like fixation and your need to pillory him.

reply

Haha...I have to give you credit on that last sentence...that's funny!

I broke my word only because for some reason you replied to me with information that I didn't ask for, didn't need and wasn't useful to me. Why? It was made up!

I replied and asked you to provide a link where you got your summarization from. Why? Because you have this penchant for just making stuff up. I'm not BillBrown. I don't have any type of running vendetta against you. I'm not trying to prove any one wrong or right. Your opinion or beef with Disney is yours and last time I checked no one from Disney has been here to engage with you on your ever running scorched earth tirade. I don't have the slightest idea what you want from Disney either. Adopt Universal's low-cost horror movie financial model? Who knows?

If you want to provide a platform for a back and forth why not use, I don't know, facts, humor, interesting quotes but something more than just your over-wrought, biased, negative, so called Telling-It-Like-It-Is rants on all things Disney. Oh, I forgot, "They're your favorite company". Huge eye-roll and no one is buying it.

reply

why on earth would you follow box office? would you rather watch the movies? what a strange individual you are, get a life

reply

The one that needs to "get a life " here appears to be you as there is nothing more "strange" than you caring about what interests me.

reply

and what interests you is weird, get a life

reply

I'm sorry to tell you that pre-ticket sales have already exceeded 4 billion dollars in Lichtenstein and Greenland alone. And some projections have that number soaring to 800 quintillion dollars once tickets are available for presale on Easter Island. Interest is pretty high, I'd say. So much so that extra-terrestrial space martians from an alien galaxy have initiated first contact and teleported mounds of space cash here to get in on the early ticket sales so they don't have to watch the screen all that way back at Xeta Reticulon IV.

reply

They’re crazy for comic book movies on Easter Island.

well your kinda right....Apparently Captain Marvel Is MORE than WW...Heading toward a 125+ Opening Weekend

Remember the fervent excitement leading up to that smash?

^^^^

I do, apparently though, Captain Marvel has evem more of a fervent excitement leading up to THIS smash since you know Its heading toward a 125 + Million OW

At this point, this may be looking at Ant-man level numbers.

^^^^

You just had to make it worse for yourself, the title was bad, the first 2 lines in the thread were WORSE , but Nope leave to you to stick the knife in your chest even further and add this ^^^

Truly Epic fail as usual...

Looking forward to adding Captain Marvel to your ever growing list of films you MISSED by more than 50 + on their opening Weekends

reply

tlj made money on brand alone and it is one of the worst films ever made.

Suffice to say this will likely make bank, but it wont break bank, that's for sure.

reply

Queen Pretending this thread doesnt exist and HIDING doesnt make it go away!

your either going to have to deal with it...or delete it in SHAME

you made some really awful statements and predictions here that are DISASTROUSLY failing....

I cant think of anything much worse than literally making a thread for the sole purpose of GUARANTEEING Captain Marvel Wont Top Wonder Woman, literally saying "This aint no Wonder Woman", Literally going into detail why CM wont have an opening weekend as big as WW by saying "Remember the fervent excitement leading up to that smash" ...

and now its clear, CM is easily going to destroy WW

I mean this is as bad as it gets....

No I take that back somehow you made it worse by adding " At this point, this may be looking at Ant-man level numbers."

I mean It wasnt enough for you to FAIL once....somehow the last line of this epic disaster of a thread....has know put you in a position where you going to be off by 50 + M yet AGAIN....

queen you've been forced to admit your defeat and you were wrong and many boards before...It probably best at this point you just get out in front of this one and start minimizing the embarrassment now...

HIDING and ignoring this thread can only result in more pain, shame and embarrassment....delete it...or simply admit its one of you biggest failures and move on

reply

I'm not embarrassed of this thread at all...soon we shall see in about 72 hours if this can beat WW's OW and also if it can beat it's domestic total of 410 million.

I still say no on both counts...especially the latter.

Be careful bill...you're acting incredibly cocky for a movie that has not yet opened.

reply

I'm not embarrassed of this thread at all...soon we shall see in about 72 hours if this can beat WW's OW and also if it can beat it's domestic total of 410 million.

^^^

lol nice try queen...

But unfortunately you KILLED any chance of "spinning" your failed prediction when you said
"Remember the fervent excitement leading up to that smash?"

by saying this ^ your making it perfectly clear you are TALKING about OPENING WEEKEND...

lol hilariously You were too stupid to make the thread correctly....Its clear you see the tracking you know CM is easily going to KILL Wonder Woman's opening weekend and in desperation your now you going try to claim you were talking about Total box office....

but in a way ONLY YOU could fail....You made the thread in a way...You simply cant even do that...

By specifically noting Wonder Woman's Hype Before release....you made it perfectly clear you were talking about opening Weekend....

and then to further cripple yourself you added....." At this point, this may be looking at Ant-man level numbers."

again, this makes it perfectly clear you are referring to opening weekend numbers...

because lets face it, AM2s total numbers arent close to WW's total numbers...

so hilariously, You made this thread...

A. to where you cant change it desperation

and B. to where you are going to be wrong no matter what.

If you do desperately try to claim you were talking about World Wide Totals....

then whats your explanation for when CM easily Beats AM2's World Wide Numbers?

at the end you clearly state, The best case scenario for CM seems to be AM2 numbers....of course you were clearly talking about ONLY Opening Weekend, But because you were so wrong, In desperation you'll change it to Total box office...

so in truly fitting fashion....you made this thread so terribly and you can even change it and WIN...

once you are forced to change it to World Wide box office after CM easily out grosses WW and AM2 opening Weekend.....then Youll have no explanation for why CM easily out grossed AM2s World Wide total(remember according to you that is CMs best case scenario)

just an epic fail

reply

on we shall see in about 72 hours if this can beat WW's OW and also if it can beat it's domestic total of 410 million.

^^^

again I'm not even going to entertain your desperate attempt to now claim you were talking about "World Wide or Domestic" box...fortunately you and your thread make it clear you were ONLY talking about Opening weekend box office

but I must say I do find this statement funny "also if it can beat it's domestic total of 410 million."

its funny because it sounds so FAMILIAR.....almost like I've heard it before?????

oh wait, I have....

lol On The Black Panther Board....where you guaranteed Black Panther would NOT Top WW's domestic total....

lol hilariously you changed you prediction 6 times in desperation there...

first it was.

Black Panther Wont top WW's 411 domestic total

Then it was Black Panther wont top Age of Ultron's 460 Million domestic total

Then It was it wont top 500 Million domestic

Then it was It wont Top The Last Jedi's domestic total

then it was it wont make 700 Million...

lol and finally we got

I'll happily admit I got Blank Panther wrong.

good times

"CM is easily going to destroy WW"

You sure about that, bill? I think you would do yourself a favor in the future to finally break away from boxoffice.com and join the real world.

reply

Captain Marvel was never going to beat Wonder Woman as she doesn't have the cultural resonance or fandom that WW has.

And that's perfectly fine.

This movie can still be successful while not earning as much at the BO.

reply

A voice of reason , should a rare thing when talking to Queen

reply

^^^^

lol sure I'll break away from Bo.com

where should I go ?

deadline?

they are predicting a 150 M+ Opening

maybe Bomojo.com?

They are predicting 155 Million +

queen can you find any sites not predicting 150 M+?

lol you seem to be the 1 in a fantasy world....

at this point its a no brainer CM is going to KILL Wonder Woman's opening weekend ...

that is why you made this thread....

by saying " Remember the fervent excitement leading up to that smash?"......You made it perfectly clear you made this thread with Opening weekend in mind...

You did not believe CM had the HYPE or the Name to match Wonder Woman's Opening weekend....

You then claimed a best case scenario would be AM2 type numbers...

Im sorry queen...this is your fault...You made this thread to where you have no wiggle room....I know you want to change it now in desperation to World Wide Box office....but you simply put your foot in your mouth....those last 2 statements you added make it impossible for you to weasel out of this ....

CM is easily going to KILL BOTH Wonder Woman's Opening weekend and AM2's Opening weekend....

You need to break away from The fantasy world your living in and accept you and thread FAILED and while your breaking away, be sure to check every major box office website, for some reason you are living in a world where you believe only 1 website is predicting a 150 + OW for CM and In the real world...Literally every Major site is predicting 150 M+

lol

seriously....on a scale from 1 to 10....how much do you regret making this post?

you have to be sitting at home thinking "jesus, how do I get myself in to these situations"?

reply

"CM is easily going to destroy WW"

You sure about that, bill? I think you would do yourself a favor in the future to finally break away from boxoffice.com and join the real world.

^^^^

yes queen I'm sure....

deadline is reporting a 155 to 160 M+ OW for CM....

hilariously exactly where bo.com said....

all around just a total nightmare for you!

reply

If that is the case, then we are basically looking at a film with Wonder Woman's budget but will only gross half of what Wonder Woman did globally

^^^^

jesus queen....

Now you really cant claim you were talking "World Wide" box office....

Lol Your already trying to desperately change your stance now that you see CM is easily going to kill WW's opening weekend...

and That was already impossible because you said "Remember the fervent excitement leading up to that smash?".....which clearly proves you were talking about The Hype of the film leading to Opening Weekend....

and of course then you pushed the knife in deeper by saying " At this point, this may be looking at Ant-man level numbers."

This ^ proves you were talking about Opening Weekend.....

and now I foound this....

If that is the case, then we are basically looking at a film with Wonder Woman's budget but will only gross half of what Wonder Woman did globally

^^^^

lololololol you made this statement hours after creating this thread....which proves You believe CM was only going to make 400 Million World Wide.....therefor the only possible thing this " At this point, this may be looking at Ant-man level numbers." could mean is OPENING weekend.

AM2 made 620 M+

since you clearly state CM will only make 400 M WW.....Then theres no other explanation than You are referring to "Opening Weekend" when you state " At this point, this may be looking at Ant-man level numbers. "

sorry queen, there is no spinning this one....you simply said too much..

here are the things you said and they can not be Spun any other way-

1st-CM Will not top Wonder Woman's OW

2nd-CM at best will match AM2s OW

3rd-CM is Looking at a 400 M World Wide total

4th-CM has a bigger budget than WW(wrong both have 150 M budgets)-proof-

Captain Marvel carries a production budget around $152M (Black Panther cost an estimated $200M before P&A).-from deadline

lol there no way out....its your fault...you just kept trolling and trolled your way into CONCRETE statements and predictions that you can NOT Spin
