Captain Marvel, also known as Shazam, is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker created the character in 1939. Wikipedia

Except....Whiz Comics was published by FAWCETT Comics, not DC. In fact, Captain Marvel (the Big Red Cheese) outsold DCs Superman to an extent that DC went to their FAVORITE ploy....they sued Fawcett saying the better selling Captain Marvel was a rip-off of Superman. Which Fawcett won but DC appealed in 1951 (when sales were on the decline for superhero comics), leading to Fawcett settling out of court (because it was not financially viable anymore to have the fight) and ceasing publication of superhero comics. DC waiting until 1972 (years after Marvel premiered their own Captain Marvel character) to buy the rights to the Fawcett characters and found Marvel now owned the copyright to the name.

Oppsie Doopsie DC.

DC vs. Marvel characters is basically the modern version of Greek vs. Roman gods -- The same characters but with different names and slightly different looks.

Bottom line: the name 'Captain Marvel' officially belongs to Marvel Comics...and their character.

The DC "Captain Marvel" has been going by the name Shazam for the past 40+ years.

Whoever changed the Shazam Wiki page to 'Captain Marvel' is just a bitter DC fan-boy, because that name will now and forever belong to Marvel. Nothing the DC fan-boy can do about it other than change the Wiki page, which doesn't mean jack-squat legally or otherwise.

Its hard to fathom how popular the orginal Captain Marvel was, back in 40's and 50's America he was the no.1 Superhero, more popular than Superman or Batman, until jealous Detective Comics (DC) took Captain Marvel's creators to court over copyright issues.

I'd never heard of Shazam or Captain marvel as a kid, living in the Bronze Age of Comic Books and not in America.

Bumping - uselessly so I guess - just to say FUCK this DC numbskull (and his minions) miserably trolling the Marvel boards. Unbelievable.

But wait, lemme say more. Marvel’s Captain Marvel will be the talk of the town and shall be remembered for years to come. You can BET on it! The DC “Shazam” one? It might have a solid box office opening (maybe, just maybe decent reviews) at best. But if it does well and doesn’t crash and burn like the recent DCEU trash, at the end of the day Brie Larson’s hero will be all that matters. ;)

Agreed. I don't necessarily think it will be revered as highly after Avengers 4, but Marvel has the formula down to make CM a solid addition. As much as I'd like DC to succeed (I like both), they are stuck in an experimental phase, and Shazam appears to be another experiment.

Word on the street is the next movie to come from the DCEU, Aquaman, looks like it could be a home fun for DC. With someone such as James Wan attached to it, I am not surprised. I can’t say that I have much interest in it, but if it does deliver, then credit where credit is due.

And I’m not necessarily against DC—just fed up with the anti-Marvel trolls, lol. Although, these clowns certainly make me gloat whenever their movies fail. But anyway, while I have a greater admiration for Marvel I’ve always been a big Batman fan and I do like a handful of other DC characters. But the DCEU? No thanks. Given their track record, I have little reason to feel optimistic over the upcoming movies in this universe. Things could turn around, of course. I mean, while I highly doubt Shazam will steal Captain Marvel’s thunder, I will say it kinda sounds like an interesting experiment, at least for the DCEU. That movie sounds like the furthest thing from a Zack Snyder feature

Come what may, I’m stoked for Marvel’s Captain Marvel.
