Her Mother..

How was her mother getting an income to live? They didn't show her having a job, only saying how much she drank and her boyfriend was a crackhead. I know you can't get SSI for drug and alcohol problems because I have had some drinking problems with severe depression and anxiety and when I applied I was repeatedly denied. I'm over 50 and I'm still getting denied.

It could be she was getting welfare (TANF) except they require you to attend school or look for a job to keep getting a check so I don't think that would be it. Maybe in Michigan they have other social problems that I'm not aware of.

She might be somewhat functional - Claressa mentions "when her mom is sober" or she might be applying for jobs and just not getting any - unemployment is sky high in Flint, even if you are sober (especially 4 years ago, when they were filming this). Also, when was a part of U.S. boxing she got a stipend of $1,000 a month to help pay expenses so she could train. That's why she went with her mom to pay the water bill.
