'Do It now' *spoiler*

So Michaels is told to kill Tanner "now" via text in the cantina and they go hogwild all over the joint. Then the 2nd and 3rd teammate reveal the plan was for Michaels to take Tanner to the aroyo which would start open season. Seems like a serious and unnecessary plot hole. Unless I missed something.
