While as a consumer, I like when media companies do this, I do wonder if for new programs like this, do these marketing methods help or hurt the product? I mean, there is the constant notation that online ads don't make as much money as TV ones, so why release not one, not two, but three episodes online? Most shows, by episode 3, have pretty much set their ratings standard. So why for a new release, which is based on a book which I would argue isn't on the level of "Fault In Our Stars" and what not, would you seemingly set it up to fail?

With the amount of shows on broadcast, cable and streaming, cable channels have to do whatever it takes to get their new shows watched by viewers. SyFy put episodes 3 and 4 of the Expanse online after the first two episodes aired, and the pilot for that show was released early. Lifetime put the second and third episode of Unreal after the premiere of that show (and it might have been episode 4 as well), and they also released the pilot of that show before the premiere. TNT did something similar for Public Morals.
You also have to consider that cable companies are not making all of their revenue off advertising. Carriage fees are an important source of revenue for a channel like ABC Family. Ownership of a show is another key part of making a show profitable.
