That gun/fight scene after he escapes the torture of Blut was as unrealistic a scene as I've ever seen in a movie. The acting in this movie was absolutely atrocious, characters were cheesy, and it looks like there could be another.
I think I'll read the comic and see if it was any better.
Then you haven't seen either of The John Wick movies, or Kill Bill, or Smokin' Aces, or...
I guess my point is that this movie is meant to be a caricature of an action movie where style takes precedence over realism. Enjoy it for what it is... a comic book movie.

shareYeah, I figured you probably did. The 'style' of action used in this movie -- that over-the-top style -- is in keeping with the graphic novel source material.
Not all directors can pull it off well. It really depends on some good choreography. Did you see Season 3 of Daredevil on Netflix? (If you haven't, check it out... it's just good drama, never mind the superhero stuff.)
There's a long fight sequence in a prison hallway that's awesome to see, partially because it was filmed in one long take. Realistically though, the characters would have been exhausted before half the fight was finished.
I've seen the first 2 seasons. Haven't gotten around to that 3rd season, or the latest seasons of Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Soon, tho......
shareLuke Cage was good, but DD S3 was some of the best small screen storytelling I've ever seen. I'm still pissed that it was cancelled, but at least it does come to a natural end point. And maybe ending it on a high note isn't such a bad thing.

shareI actually didn't like Shoot 'Em Up.
It started kind of cool but then the entire movie's message were "muh guns R bad! Muh Republicans R bad! Gun control noaw!!!!"
They even hammered the message home by suspending all suspense during the second-half action sequences in order to point out how ridiculous guns and shootout sequences are. It was both winking at and mocking audiences of action films.
That kind of parody can absolutely work, but only when it parodies the subject matter while also treating it with enough respect so as not to undermine or antagonize its own audience. A good example of that is Kung-Fu Hustle, which parodied kung-fu classics with great results, but ALSO... managed to include some pretty awesome fight sequences, especially toward the end of the movie, so as to also give the nod to audiences while also winking at them.
Hot Fuzz is another awesome satirical parody of buddy-up action movies that mocks them in the beginning, but then actually gives audiences a pretty cool series of action sequences at the end of the film.
Shoot 'Em Up was not like that.
The film reeked of boardroom Liberalism during the second half, and the heavy-handed messaging was more of a turn-off than anything. It's one of the few action movies I desperately wanted to see when it originally came out, but feel like I never want to see again.
