Allentown Gang - Know why assassins were named after Allentown?

Because I don't. I'm originally from Allentown, and we watched it on HBO and laughed and said "Did they say Allentown?" Then we said they must be saying "out of town". Nope, they said Allentown. Why?

Tried to see if the co-writer, Alex Rubens is from Allentown (that's usually the reason for a gratuitous reference) but I can't find his birth place online.

Just curious.

Thanks. And we thought it was damn funny.

Well, they don't explicitly say which Allentown they are from. Since the film takes place in California, I would initially assume that it's Allentown, CA. The Allentown Boys, however, are named Smoke and Oil, which would suggest that it's actually Allentown, PA.

I wonder if, given the copious pop-culture references in the movie, it might simply be a nod to the Billy Joel song, "Allentown". Other than that, I've got nothing.

I figured it was a Billy Joel reference. It kind of goes hand in hand with all of the George Michael references.

Randomness incoming... but Peele's Allentown character looks just like Shaquille O'Neal in the face lol
