Who killed that child, the officer or the soldier (Hopkins)?

In Hopkins' speech at the cemetery, he told the story about his younger self shooting that kid, following orders from an officer.

The question is, who killed that child? The soldier by pulling the trigger or the officer by giving the order to shoot?

I'd say, in a situation like that, it's on the soldier.

Just curious how others think. Thoughts?
