FFJ - an American Hyacinth Bucket?

Shortly into this movie (which my wife and I enjoyed) I realized that Florence was was putting me in the mind of an American version of Hyacinth Bucket ("That's Bouquet") from "Keeping Up Appearances." Florence obviously was the type of person Hyacinth wanted to be. Hyacinth was obsessed with doing things "correctly," thought that she was a great singer, and enjoyed having (candlelight) dinner parties. And both of their husbands would go along with whatever their spouses wished.

Please don't think that I'm saying the two characters are identical, or that Streep was intentionally imitating Hyacinth. I'm just saying that one reminded me of the other.

Your thoughts?

I can sort of see it a little, but then in most ways they're complete opposites.

All the way through the film I just kept thinking about Keeping up Appearances. Her voice, mannerisms and singing was very much like Hyacinth's.

Actually, she put me more in mind of "Lucia" - from E.F. Benson's "Mapp & Lucia" comic novels. While Lucia left the singing to others, the 'tableaux vivants', the devotion to classical music (an affectation in Lucia's case), being the acknowledged Queen Bee of a small social circle where she was the arbiter of culture and civilized behaviour - all very Lucia....

OH MY GOD I COULD HARDLY THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE BUT HYACINTH BUCKET THROUGH OUT. The resemblance in looks, speaking voice and YES THAT SINGING VOICE were all absolutely uncanny. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves and everyone else. LOL.
