The will

I assumed the reason St. Clair had protected her and stayed with her was because she was filthy rich and he wanted a part of it. Which is also why he instructed the pianist to never ask about the briefcase. But it's said at the end of the film that her husband and the pianist whom she had added to her will lived relatively simple after her death.

In the beginning I thought he was with her because of money too, but then I realized her genuinely cared for her. Even when he was with this "girlfriend" he couldn't stop thinking about her. I've got to say this is Hugh Grant's best role ever. He was magnificent (as so were the rest of the actors too).
