Butchered the book

Does anyone else feel like they butchered the book? I saw the movie before I read the books and really liked it, and still like it as it's own story, but compared to the book it's almost a completely different entity. I feel like the completely stripped Hardin of who he is in the book and the traits that make him, him. Am I the I only one?
