Did they even look....

for the babies body? Tiny canal, wouldn't have taken long to find the cat.

Lots of holes in this one. For example, the way the couple downstairs always knew what was going on and when to do what ... the movie should have made a point of showing them hijacking the baby monitor signal or something. Also, the way the husband automatically disbelieves everything the wife says completely. Nothing in the setup for their relationship that sets a stage for that kind of patronizing condescension. And so on.

yup. and that's only for starters.

Christ, I know, right? There would be a major investigation into the death of a mother and child, even where it seems obvious that the mother has killed the child and then committed suicide. For starters, they'd search a long time for the baby's body, and it would be deemed odd that they couldn't find it, given that the father is at the scene of the apparent dumping in no more than 2 hours and immediately calls in the authorities.

And when the authorities ask him if he has any idea of why his wife might have done this, isn't it reasonable to think that he'd say "she was acting crazy - she even thought our downstairs neighbours were trying to steal our baby"? Which, coupled with the lack of a baby's body, would surely merit further investigation.

And all this is before we even start to consider the difficulties involved in trying to pass another person's baby off as your own! You can't just stroll into a registry office and go "hello, one birth certificate, please!". You also need a birth certificate to get a passport, and given that they supposedly flee overseas at the end, not having a passport would prevent them from going anywhere.

Frankly, the last 10-15 minutes of this really pissed me off. All logic and semblance of reality was thrown out of the window to deliver what was - thanks to the plethora of plot holes - a really unsatisfying twist. It was doubly upsetting as I felt this was a decent suspense thriller, prior to the climax, at any rate. What a shame.

I agree with your lengthy input but perhaps it overextends beyond the level of casual viewing.

Honestly, that was my only real gripe about this film. There would have definitely been an investigation and the pond (it wasn't even some big lake!) would've been searched. But honestly, they sort of had me going for a minute thinking that the mother had thrown him in there, just based on the scene from before when they made it almost look like she was considering it. It really threw me off because they had just found another place to live, and of course I HAD expected the weirdos downstairs to try and steal the baby. it got back "on track" shortly thereafter, though..... But yes, that baby would've been found either way in reality.
