Prong collars

Admirable people but if they are trying to show that pit bulls are not dangerous why did every dog in the training class have a prong collar on? Or is that just normal in the USA? Looked like Mel had a shock collar but can't be sure of that.

Prong collars are quite controversial here. I agree they can be cruel if used in the wrong way. But I can tell you that I have been a student in BADRAP's classes. The dogs in the classes are handled very gently, no one ever yanks or pulls on their dog. Once I even tugged a bit on my dog(no prong collar) and was told not to do so. We were encouraged to engage with our dogs using voice, eye contact, enthusiasm and guidance with body language. I believe prong collars are used on several of the dogs because they are often very big and strong and need to be kept very close to their handler to succeed in the training program.

On a side note, I have also volunteered at their rescue barn shown in the movie and it is such a beautiful place. The dogs are meticulously cared for. Everyone is so patient and loving towards them. I have also met a couple of the former Vick dogs, including Johnny Rotten and they were just lovely, so cute and surprisingly small.

Also, Mel appears to be wearing a GPS tracker on his collar, not a shock collar.

I have reaponded to every oringal post once in this documentary. However, the individual who started this thread and the individual I am responding to presently are the only posts that made sense. Congrats to you both. Also, I recommend this doc as it was educational and brutally insightful and I wish to thank everyone that was involved producing this doc:)

Shut up, no one cares Vick apologist. Your transparent trolling efforts on this documentary's message board reveal you to be the tool you are, insulting people who even mildly criticize that piece of sh%t animal abuser.

Hmmm..HCC..must be hateful clueless creep...I think we should all stop wasting our time on this choche and leave him and his hand alone...anyone who even sticks up for that piece of garbage MV( I dont say his name, because in my eyes he is dead), then you are not only pathetic, you are flat out ignorant, I am so glad I don't know who you are because not only would your presence make me dumber, just the sound of your voice would make my ears bleed. I hope that one day maybe you will actually get some. For now, keep your mouth shut is the best option for you. Remember to give your hand a break.

Our Golden Retriever -- like our pitbull -- has a pinch/prong collar.

You have to realize that, with a pinch/prong collar, the dog determines what happens. If they pull, they give themselves negative feedback. If they don't, there is no discomfort whatsoever.

When we switched our Golden to his pinch/prong collar, he went from being an unruly dog yanking constantly to the point of hurting my hand even though I wore a thick leather glove, to "walking a leash". No comparison and problem solved.

Same thing could be achieved with an ordinary collar and positive reward, not the lazy route of threatening pain.
