Thoughts on the ending

Minor spoilers obviously.

How did you guys interpret the ending? Despite the film being quite sad and melancholy and the lead Nathalie going through so many abrupt and violent changes in her life I thought the ending was quite sweet.

Life goes on, and here is Nathalie, embracing (literal) new life in the form of her grandchild. Her life isn't what she thought it would be but at the same time she seems content and doesn't want to go back (it's actually quite funny to see her ex hanging around sort of begging for an invite and the way she keeps telling him to leave because she has to get dinner ready and to have fun with his book).

I also really loved the choice of Unchained Melody at the end. Really bold considering it already has quite a famous movie association already with Ghost, but I thought it worked well!

That's my interpretation too and frankly I really don't see any other interpretation for the ending. It's a "slice of life" movie and these sorts of movies don't really have solid concrete endings per se. I think they all share that life goes on sort of ending.

If you haven't already seen it, I'd recommend Umi yori mo mada fukaku (2016) another movie not unlike this one in that it shares the same placid pace and is a slice of life with no "wrapped in a bow" ending.

I like 'Still Walking' from the same director. There is an ending, but life goes on. In fact, when Nathalie's daughter cries in the hospital, it is quite similar to what the end of Still Walking wants to say - more explicitly (in Still Walking) though.
