Yes, Tony and Amelia are hippies to the definition. That being said, they definitely grew on me over the season. I didn't really like them at first, but now I am very impressed with what they have accomplished with their forest garden/livestock herd. It seems to really be thriving, and more power to them for doing it all with no income.
Not many people today that could try to do what they've done and be successful at it. They certainly have an advantage working together and striving for the same goals in life.
Colbert is probably the second most successful in the wilderness, but his money and financial background, I think, gives him an unfair advantage. He uses a lot of modern stuff to get work (like his rifle and metal canoe) done whereas Tony scrounges through trash and leftover materials and makes them work for what he needs. I would guess he still has a decent amount of money put away somewhere.
