None of these people know what they're doing.

Besides Colbert. I'd watch a show on just him.

The rest are weird hippies who don't even know how to hunt. How can you live in the wilderness and not know how to get food? I bet when the cameras aren't around they just go to the grocery store.

I think Tony and Amelia kind of know what they're doing, they don't get it right the first time but that's normal. They're young and attempting to do something really difficult but it seems like they're having fun working it out so I like their segments.

Thorn and Gabriel seem the most fake to me honestly and don't seem to really have their own skill sets. Thorn's hut is sort of pathetically bad and Gabriel seems like he's just on vacation. Their bits seem the most heavily edited.

Colbert seems like he might be the real deal...but he also seems like he's kind of nuts.

Tony seems to be a loser compared to Amelia. He tows the line while she does most of the work and has most of the knowledge. I will be there for her when she finally tosses him out.

reply

I dunno, he seems kind of quirky and goofy but I think that's what she likes about him. When he does something wussy or weird she's usually grinning at him. Her dad is kind of a weirdo too so it's not too surprising that they're together. She's obviously tougher than he is but not every woman wants some macho guy and it seems like they work well together. And he is pretty inventive with all that scavenging. Everyone has their own types.

Amelia is pretty cute though, all that work gave her a pretty fit body.

reply

I think they compliment each other well. She definitely doesn't mind getting her hands dirty, where he gets sick over something nasty (which in some cases I don't blame him). But he definitely stepped up in the finale by pulling those pig teeth out.

How do you know her dad's a weirdo?

reply

Just from the couple episodes he was in. I didn't mean weird in a bad way just that the dad seemed kind of quirky and goofy too, especially when they were knocking that cabin down.

I don't buy into Gabriel one bit. He claims to be a nomad yet he just hangs out in his buddies guest house and shoots things with his bow. Not to mention the fact that he walks around wearing store-bought clothes and all.

I was cracking up when he gave the little crappy rattle to that Native American guy (Gabriel's 'spirit guide'). He is nowhere close to living a Native American lifestyle

Tony is a dirty hippie. I do think he and his wife are probably making the most of true 'live off the land' lifestyle. I think 'Thorn' is a weirdo, he probably couldn't cut it working some fast food joint so decided to buck the system and go live in the woods. He's awfully proud of his cabin but it looks like a joke.

reply

Yes, Tony and Amelia are hippies to the definition. That being said, they definitely grew on me over the season. I didn't really like them at first, but now I am very impressed with what they have accomplished with their forest garden/livestock herd. It seems to really be thriving, and more power to them for doing it all with no income.

Not many people today that could try to do what they've done and be successful at it. They certainly have an advantage working together and striving for the same goals in life.

Colbert is probably the second most successful in the wilderness, but his money and financial background, I think, gives him an unfair advantage. He uses a lot of modern stuff to get work (like his rifle and metal canoe) done whereas Tony scrounges through trash and leftover materials and makes them work for what he needs. I would guess he still has a decent amount of money put away somewhere.

Thorn was a school teacher in his previous life so I'm pretty sure he could have handled a "fast food joint type job" if he WANTED to. So judgemental.

While I'm sure lots of this show is scripted, I still enjoy it and my hat is off to those who can do it.

I find this show very interesting to watch, but being self sufficient isn't all about growing your own food and building your own house. My guess is none of these people have any sort of savings or health insurance. If by chance they get ill or fall and break a limb or get mauled by a bear, who'll take care of them or pay the medical bills? It's not like you can pay your hospital bill in beaver pelts. I'll continue to watch because I do like the show, but they are not realistically being fully responsible for themselves and have no plan for the unexpected.

I was also shocked at Amelia saying "maybe in a year we'll have another little human living here." Who's going to pay the tens of thousands for birthing a child, putting it through school, feeding it, etc. I think this way of live is nice as a part-time seasonal diversion, but not as a fulltime way of life. Just IMO.

Ah but you see mpt, that's the beauty of it. See, they go about living the way they want to live, and if something happens to them or they do have a baby, they can go to the hospital where the rest of us get stuck with their bill.

Thanks obama.

While I can appreciate wanting to live a minimalist lifestyle, living off the land and getting closer to nature etc there's nothing cute about smelling like ass because you only hose off in soapy hot water about twice a year and having your teeth rot out of your head because you are brushing your teeth with tree bark and clay.

The new guy, Matt Graham, the guy living out in Utah, knows what he is doing. He was on Dual Survival and made a good impression.

Most of them are nothing but damn forest dwelling hipsters, and they have no clue, or very little, about what they're friggin' doing! Not even in the wild we can avoid those pesky hipsters! ARRRGH!

- and what's this running with your ass out of your pants about!? The idiot looks like a contender in a friggin' gay parade!
