Batman lusting after Batgirl in this movie...

Why? Why is this still a thing? I don't care if it isn't mutual in this film, having any kind of romantic connection between Bruce Wayne and Barbara Gordon is creepy and nonsensical. What reason is there for even doing this? Just because she's female and vaguely dresses up like a bat?

For God's sake...

Why is it creepy?

I suppose it's less creepy in this particular film's case since Barbara has obviously never dated Dick Grayson (who is still a kid) in this continuity, but there's still some weird things about it. For one, the idea of Batman getting with the daughter of one of his closest allies behind his back just seems really sleazy.

Furthermore, Batman's relation with the other members of the Bat-family should be that of a mentor. A mentor lusting after their students is NOT acceptable behavior in the vast majority of cultures, regardless of whether or not the student is an adult.

Besides that, there's also the fact that it's an incredibly lazy and fanfic-esque pairing. What chemistry do the two of them have that would possibly be worth exploring in any capacity? The fact that they're of the opposite sex and have "Bat" in their superhero names? It's just stupid.

The whole Batman x Batgirl certainly isn't anywhere near as bad in this movie as it was in TKJ, but the idea of Batman lusting after Barbara still comes off as a very bizarre idea. What reason is there for him to be crushing on her? To remind everyone that he's straight?

It was another reference to Batman adaptions. Barbara Gordon and Bruce Wayne were an item in the Batman series in the late 1990's as well in Batman Beyond they were former lovers. There are a few other instances where they paired them as an item, but I can't think of them at the moment. Generally speaking, they are not romantically involved in most adaptions. You will note that they had them as just friends at the end, so the romantic interest was just an aside to various adaptions and a funny bit.

I'm with you, I loved the movie, but wasn't feeling the Batman wanting Barbara thing. I don't care if it was referenced a few times in other adaptations, I wouldn't have liked it there either. Most of the stories have Batman as father figure/mentor to Barbara so it's weird for me to see them as anything more. Plus, I always liked the Barbara and Dick romance and that seems completely off the table for this franchise. I'm a Catwoman fan, so I wish they could have given her a bigger role and had Batman wanting her (it makes a lot more sense). I guess Catwoman would have been too sexy for this movie.

It was obvious in Batman '66 that they were attracted to each other.

Self-absorbed Batman isn’t rewarded with Batgirl’s affections because this wasn’t made by Bruce Timm. https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com/2017/02/12/the-lego-batman-movies-bat-tastic/

If this were made by Bruce Timm, Batgirl would've been the one lusting after him for most of the movie.

The film is told from a kid's perspective (specifically the kid from The LEGO Movie). It's a staple of most genres of films that the Leading Man pairs up with the Leading Woman, which we already saw with Emmet and Wyldstyle. Additionally, the last time we saw LEGO Batman, his girlfriend had just broken up with him, so he's clearly unattached at the moment. It's also a core element of his character that he's used to getting everything he wants, and Barbara is set up to be pretty much everything that LEGO Batman would value in a girlfriend.

Just watched the Killing Joke this weekend, prior to seeing Lego Batman and there was a scene with Batgirl and Batman. This movie is not breaking new ground.

1. That scene is pretty controversial just on the basis that it was added exclusively for the movie with no basis in the actual graphic novel, combined with how the rest of the story plays out for Barbara.

2. The New Batman Adventures did it around 20 years ago, without the uproar.

I hated the Batman/Batgirl romance in the DCAU as well. There wasn't as much of an uproar there because it was mostly only heavily implied in those shows. There certainly was no gratuitous sex scene between the two of them.

As a whole, I really don't see why anyone would think that having Batgirl as a love-interest for Batman is a good idea. What reason is there for pairing them up, outside of the fact that she's a female who wears a bat costume?

reply

1. Depends on how many Elseworlds titles you've read (and which ones).

2. Depends on whether you're a young kid who's used to seeing the Leading Male and Leading Female end up "together" without any specific idea of what that entails.

3. Depends on how much you contemplate how hard it would be for Batman to actually have any sort of romantic life as Bruce Wayne that doesn't involve someone who's part of the whole Gotham nightlife scene. There's a reason that Batman is regularly linked with Catwoman and Talia al Ghul more than, say, Vicki Vale.

The main reason that Batman is more frequently hooked up with Talia and Catwoman is because Vicki Vale isn't a very interesting character. She's basically just a Lois Lane knockoff.

There's also this whole problem:

"I'm secretly that guy that the police want to arrest every few weeks because I roughed up some supervillain a bit more than the public is comfortable with.

"I'm an investigative journalist, and you forgot to say this was off the record."

I honestly think they just put it in there to convince people Batman is straight, specially after his interactions with the Joker.
