If you read a lot of the reviews you can tell THIS is what they want to say, but everyone loved the Lego movie sooooo much they didn't want to nay-say this movie in anyway. Also I think it's a hard film to judge because as is, it's fine, it's just a kids movie meant for kids. Where as the Lego Movie appealed to adults and kids, and since this was also Batman critics wanted it so badly to have that same appeal. But a majority of reviews I've read used lines like "joke exhaustion" or something similar, like they didn't want to be hard on the movie at all. Which is fine I understand that. I love Batman and I love Lego so I was disappointed with this movie as an adult, but I fully saw how the 10 and under crowd will love it which is great. Hopefully it'll lead to them finding more interesting/deeper Batman stories in the future.
Plus I think if you have a child, or took a child to see this movie for some reason their exuberance may have allowed you to enjoy the movie more. I'm sure there are grown adults who loved the movie that's fine. But lets not kid ourselves here, there is a geeky aspect to it all which is undeniable and loving Lego's as an adult is acceptable, but this whole thing is meant for kids and to sell toys. That's the bottom line to the whole thing, and if you have the cash to make an extended toy commercial to rope in young and old shoppers alike then why not do that? Batman has had a LONG history with Lego, so it would only make sense that he get's his own movie. And next to Star Wars the original Batman (at the time) was the highest selling movie toy tie in ever (just ask Michael Keaton who get a cut of the toy profits). So you have a historically well selling character (Batman) and the best selling toys on the market currently (Lego is the only toy with at least one whole row to themselves in every toy store) how is this not a match made in $$$ heaven?
Added to the fact that for no reason they slapped a bunch of characters in the movie that Lego just happens to have the rights to for their Dimensions pack (Gremlins, Dr Who Robots, Voldemort), or WB owns the rights to (King Kong with a movie coming out shortly), or Lego already has whole sets you can buy of them (LOTR, Creature From The Black Lagoon). The movie was one long toy commercial and while critics call out movies like Cars 2 as being just that, it's sad that they would let this slide by on the goodwill generated from The LEGO Movie.
