Had the potential to be very interesting. Pity it got glossed over. Perhaps the writer should have started there and shown Alex being moulded by Frances' revenge fantasy on the old boys network.

She reminded me a bit of Connie in Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People.
Connie was clearly brilliant enough, with her perfect memory, to be a top agent. But was relegated to a kind of research position in the days of the old boys' network at the Circus.
I can see the Connie thing as well. She was like a cross between Connie and Miss Havisham. Agreed. Should have started with Alex as a child and onto the destiny that Rampling created.
